Scouts 12 km?
Even normal bmt people have to go for at least 24 km.
Scouts are the only other profession other than commandos that is permited to wear the jungle hat outfield and thus they also go thru some rigorous training that are the same as what the commandos does, one of such training is the 72 km recce cum route march which they have to complete within one day/24 hours
You sure or not????? For your information, BRC and snipers are permited to wear the jungle hat outfield too. We also did 72Km island wide typo during my sniper course too.
I knew this cause i was in the scout platoon during bmt, thou the 72km is not done in bmt but during trade course when u are really trained to be a scout. In bmt,up to 24 km route march is done.
well brc=battalion recee company so equal or almost equal to scout too.Originally posted by tchiew:

Pwah... the latter part u mentioned is likened a third of what we went tru back then. The designated area for the current long walk will be quite easy for the armour recce as that's the playground we exercised on.
Infantry snipers select from sispec bslc.Originally posted by GenX:well brc=battalion recee company so equal or almost equal to scout too.
As for sniper, i was never told or did i bother to do any check on that so i will admit that i m ignorant on this
Anyway just a question here, are snipers picked from all sorta combat units or do they come from commandos only?
my friends from 3 guards, walked 73km last year.Originally posted by mr_sotong:guards only walk until 32km...
Other than snipers from Commandos, there's one sniper platoon in each Infantry and Guards Brigade. There used to be sniper sections in BN in the old days. Commandos, SOF (not sure if's compulsory or just training they elect), Inf /Guards types and foreign trainees attend the same sniper course. Nice to have guys from different formation to train together.Originally posted by GenX:well brc=battalion recee company so equal or almost equal to scout too.

Well, 72 km road march is a unforgetable one. For those in leader course (CTW-topo) and Cdo sniper (SIW) they will have to do it 2 times. The last one is with the company before you pass out with red berets.Originally posted by tchiew:Other than snipers from Commandos, there's one sniper platoon in each Infantry and Guards Brigade. Been sometime since I pass out, didn't realise that Ex Long Walk has been chopped up so much. During my time in 90s, my team started in Mandai, walk around there and Sembawang, pass by SLE (under construction at that time), Woodlands, Marsiling and Kranji area, walk alongside railway line and cross Kranji Dam to Neo Tew, Lim Chu Kang. The average time taken for each team to complete was 24 hrs. My team came in at 27 hours. Started on Friday morning, finished on Saturday afternoon. Based on an average of 4km/hr, the total distance covered was somewhere between 90 to 100 km. While it isn't a route march, it is still a considerable distance to be covered. Chaffed thighs and big blisters on foot was the norm at midpoint and end point of Long Walk. At times, we even have to fast march. This is because we were walking on the main axis as we did not want to take the big detour.Originally posted by jeramy:hmmmm ISLAND wide topo???
if memory serves me right, Ex longwalk only walk around in different training areas from ntu training shed up north to the rakit/sungei area and then walk back down... now really "ISLAND-WIDE" right?
and the estimated distance is usually 25-30km. maybe toned down a lot during my time. and i heard nowadays toned down even more.
by the way im 29th bslc
the max distant the cdo will insert is 72km boefore fighting mission.Originally posted by Ferguson:is 72km the maximum distance?

yes..during my time the instructors were talking about how much toned down EX long walk had become, they mentioned something about "last time it was 50km and above" ..damn din know that it went to 90km!Originally posted by mfscrewu:Been sometime since I pass out, didn't realise that Ex Long Walk has been chopped up so much. Wonder if the recce trooper course still go overseas? My coy went to Thailand for 3 weeks for the final phrase. As usual navex are plenty. My team pushed off at about 1100 hrs at 40 degrees, came back to Sai Yok Camp the next day at about 1400 hrs. So all in all, we did the 90+ km navex twice.
Anyway, kudos to all those who did all sort of navex and route marches (whatever distance).
New scout badge? Hmm, wonder if old troopers like us are still entitled to the badge? 6 weeks for scout cmdr course, wonder what are the parts they took out. Maybe the shortened course is due to new technologies being implemented. My course lasts a total of 13 weeks. Everybody trained together during the same course, in order to foster espirt de corp. If you happen to bum into any of the old WOs, ask them whose callsign is "dragon" in the 90s. That callsign is equivalent to pain during my course.Originally posted by jeramy:yes..during my time the instructors were talking about how much toned down EX long walk had become, they mentioned something about "last time it was 50km and above" ..damn din know that it went to 90km!
nowadays longwalk can complete in a day, though they still cater 2 days to the training schedule. usually is start from ard 0900 and end at 0000 or later. shaggest walk of my life. even swampwalk at brunei was not that bad.
the trooper course still have overseas i think but is only selected batch go. but the syllabus changed a lot liao... coz now they want to "regconise" scouts more. do you know there should be a new scout badge comin out? also the scout cmd course also changed massively, heard that the course is only 4 weeks for officer and 6 weeks for specialists.
actually the commanders also train together, but just that officers will leave at the 4th week whilst the specialists stay on for another 2. then when the troopers come in the whole platoon attends another course (ISPC).Originally posted by mfscrewu:New scout badge?
