official term to address a master sergeant?

  Encik is the most popular but unofficial one.
  Sergeant Major applies only to Master Sergeants who are CSMs.
  What about a master sergeant with an appointment other than CSM?

  I didnt know encik was an unofficial way to call a MSG. To make things simple, juz address him a sergeant.

  At SMM we refered to SSGs and MSGs as 'Staff/Master So-and-So....'
  
  As for WOs, we referred to them as 'Encik So-and-So.....'

  The official rank name would still be Master Sergeant or Staff Sergeant.
  
  Sergeant Major applies to CSM or RSM only.
  
  And Encik is inappropriate because it is not a rank name nor a proper way to address soldiers. (Though they are often the oldest or the most experienced soldier)

  I never like to call MSG "master" ... sound so weird.

  I think SAF should revise this. All specs known as sgt better. Or just abolish the MSG rank... rename it loh

  imgine if a MSG's surname is Bate (or anything that sounds like it) and u call him Master followed by his surname.

  those from 1st promote to ssg -> msg
  like nothing loh, just address by name. maybe cause too used to the casual environment liao, suddenly address each other so formally very awkward.
  
  i think the transition from msg to 2wo is damn weird. you're used to calling the fella master, and now suddenly you have to call him sir. sometimes i just feel like calling him uncle chia.

  1st/2nd/3rd SGT--> "yes sergeant!"
  SSG --> "yes staff!"
  MSG --> "yes master!"
  2WO to SWO --> "yes sir!" (no need to salute)
  commissioned officers --> "yes sir" (salute)

  Haha from where I came from, the opposite is true. Normally we just call them Staff or Master.
