Why are Guards called Guards?

So confusing. They're obviously not ceremonial guards but crack troops.
the chinese label is equally misleading .. jing1 wei4 bing1 (see http://stars.zaobao.com.sg/uweekly/pages/uweekly270901.html, search for "Bedok Camp" )
In the past .. I think jing1 wei4 bing1 refers to crack troops who guard the imperial city or something, so they don't go to war, they protect the capital and the king.

anyway alot of decisions by the government and government servants esp the senior ones really no sense one lah -
It's modelled after the old British Guards formations.
1.Scots Guards(they provided the Black Watch regiment to Basra)
2.Irish Guards(Khaki beret)
3.Coldstream Guards
4.Welsh Guards
5.Grenadier Guards
They are responsible for ceremonial duties at Buckingham Palace today, when they are not on active combat duty.Their history is quite illustrious and glorious in war over the last few hundred years, as rapid, elite troops.
That's what I've heard about why we call our RDF troops Guards.

History of Guards units in Singapore -
The original SAF Guards Unit (SAFGU)was formed in 1968 to provide guards for ceremonial duties at the Istana.
SAFGU was given infantry training and renamed 1st battalion Singapore Guards (1 Gds) in 1977.
1 Gds ceased its ceremonial duties at the Istana as of 1st Mar 1980 to concentrate on her operational role, and the duties were handed over to the SAF Provost Unit. The old SAFGU Colours were retired and 1 Guards received her new Regimental and State Colours in July 1983.
So that is how the "Guards" name is retained. -

They technically under the "State" whereas the regular US Army is under "Federal" command.
Currently, they act as the 2nd wave or "reinforcement" for the first line US Army units and are trained and funded to the same level as the frist line units.
Our Guards is modelled under other "Guard" units in that they are suppose to be "elite" and "better" then the "normal" units.
the SAF Guards is initially modelled to be elite infantry reporting to HQ Infantry. They have the same training and doctrince as Infantry except they do repelling....
But now they are under HQ Guards with their own doctrine... They are now the RDF cutting edge of the SAF and also specialized in vertical and sea envelopment. -
us army's national guards are part time soldiers, weekend train abit for money loh

commandos will penatrate deep into the enemy and take out KINS (eg SAM sites), while guards will secure (if doing beach assault) the beach, than armour will chong as deep as possible than infantry will comb the little pockets ..

Whatever the case, we need the Guards as the spearhead of our assault, and Armour will go hand in hand with the Guards, in my own opinion.
Logistics too, but parallel to the advance. -

the onli difference is that they are more on the offensive and whack sooper hard....enuff time till the infantry comes marching in... -
When come to war...no one is elite and no one is hero becoz those who are elite and hero will die first...........
