Why are Guards called Guards?

Is the Guards Conversion Course really 3 months (12 weeks)?.

Yes, that's wad I heard from a Guardsman. 3 solid months of HELL! I heard they really give you big headache in the 3 months. But after the 3 months, you get to wear the coverted Khaki beret and have the words GUARDS sew on your left sleeve. REally proud to wear the tab!
BTW, when I go to all the open house and all, see many high rank officers wear Khaki Berets and Maroon Berets, But all the crest is some funny crest and not the Guards crest or the commandos crest. CAre to explain? -

Well I herd it is 3 months, from a Ex Guardsmen. Maybe his course is 20 years ago! maybe they redueced the time!

I did my guards conversion about 16 years ago. Back then, the course length varies around 4-5 weeks for officers, 6-7 weeks for NCOs and 8 weeks for the men. Each intake conducted their own variation of the course.
I'm not too sure what the course is like these days (should be even shorter), considering that NS now is reduced to 2 years, with different instruction and safety concerns. -

Right...now that certain...inconsistencies have been ironed out, let's get back to why Guards are being labelled 'elite'. Do they still deserve that label?

Unless the SAF says that all guardsmen -must- attain gold in IPPT, your point is as pointless as a blunt pencil. Since we know how hard the selection is and we know everyone of those soldier have passed selection.

It's all about who has a higher score at PSLE, who went to a better school, wh got more A's at O's .... right ? ....
and so it continues into NS, which unit is more siong, more garang, who has a higher pangkat ......
(and later, the cycle continues with cars, flats, IQ of kids ..... wifey .... )
it's a pathological thing .... you see kids over at OCS FAQ saying that they'll only want to sign on as officers .... everybody wants to be a chief, everybody wants to give orders .....
in the end, with a citizen army, and in this age where parents and the public will get their balls in a twist if any chap dies or injure himself during training, are the differences between different infantry units, or even combat arms, really that different ? ... you think one unit will dare squeeze their men more than the others ? ...
in anycase, last I checked, we all follow the same flag lor ...

let me answer the first question first... "Why are Guards called Guards? "
In the past, the sorveign's personal body guards are elite soldiers, their selection is more stringent, some of them have to serve in normal line regiments and do well before they are put into the guard units. Also their training/pay etc are supposed to be better. And the unit is suppose to be better motivated and have higher combat value then normal line units.
For eg, Napolean's Imperial Guards are all veterans of many campaigns. B4 Waterloo and after he came back from exile in Elba, all the french line regiments have to nominate 30 of their best men to join the reformed imperial guard. And he used them as his "knockout" punch in a battle, reserving them until the last moment.....
As to whether sgp guards deserve to be called elite, i know that in the past, the "intake" for Gds are more stringent then the normal SIR units. minimum height, eye sight etc etc.... now i am not sure...
but i guess they can be called elite because their roles are different... and are slightly more "complicated". but since we are all conscripts and the quality of the recruits are the same really can't say that one is more elite then the other.... -

Anyway IMHO, our Guardsmen are elite Infantry, much like the US Rangers (btw, US Rangers are not considered SF) difference being the Ranger's airborne status, and of course the duration of the RIP is maybe a month longer than our GCC. End of the day it's all about operational roles and requirements what. Just like Warcraft, you won't use a PEON to do a Berserker's job right? So let it rest about who's more elite lah...knn u all can kpkb until kingdom come, once u all ORD already also like that, bo chap bo hiew.
