I was in the NCC back in my secondary school days and am now in NS so I've had the opportunity to taste the "evolution" in quality of food in camps.
My first experience as a secondary school cadet tasting "camp food" was in 1998 and it was horrible. After being served undercooked fishballs and soggy vegetables, we had to literally force ourselves to eat. After that meal, we had to "present mess trays for inspection" and those with unfinished morsels were sent back to their tables to consume them. After that meal, I saw a couple of guys vomiting at the nearby washing point.
These days, not only is the food great in comparison but the service is not bad too. For those who actually bother to look up at the people serving you instead of just staring at your plates being filled, you'd see that the "aunties" and "uncles" are usually quite decent folks. Since enlistment, I've never had to put "lousy" in a survey and whenever I or any friends have had any problems with the food, a polite chat with an uncle or aunty has usually made more of a difference than some survey.
Well, this is just my opinion since I have heard from other friends that food quality is not always the same across the board. -
What's the point of having survey, in fact it links me to 1 Pioneer article last yr

anywway not to lazer lord but why do pple like to bring in the situation 10 years ago and compare? its not like pple are saying that the food or situation is lousy compared to 10 years ago. pple are saying that the situation is bad...................... -

i think maybe we should ask the combat chefs come back cook for a week, so that people will learn to appreciate things.

what happened to seeking for improvement?
compared to several years ago, it may be better, but then is then and now is now. whether they served mud or shit 10 years ago is irrelevant to the current batch. no one should ever be content with sub standard food. -

Since expectations and standards have gone up these days, and improvements are required - in exchange for better food, what are the men prepared to give in return? For example, are units going to perform far better in the field today?

ok wad... only once or twice a year my camp SFI will realli cock up, boil water and throw vegetables and leftovers..
other than that its edible and sometimes quite nice.
Some camps I know have western food every mon, wed and fri...
Or better still.. a camp i visited served tempura on that day!! -
I never put lousy before.
But I remember that time during BMT when I put the chip into the box labelled good, the uncle gave me a big serving of chicken thigh. -
but SFI the way they opreate also fvcking WAYANG...for example...my cap(seletar) was having an NCC camp and guess what? throughout the 3 days when the camp was on the food was WONDERFUL!!! but on that night where they never indent for the NCC kiddos...the food went back to its fvcked up standard...undercooked or overcook vegs,hard pork cubes and some other revolting stuff....its not that I wanna complain but it seems that they can cook very good food it they want to its just that they are too lazy to do so and also to cut costs...i mean...that kind of fvcked up standard deserves $5 per meal meh...I go hawker center eat more worth it...tastes better too....in camp...want more "liao" not allowed to ask for more...wtf...even 1 piece of fish have 2 be accounted for...wtf?!! C'mon la SFI u can do better than that la....dun watse taxpayers $$ by giving us fvcked up food...give us food that is worth $5 per meal...nto by giving us bread every day for breakfast or hard roti prata etc....

Last time i heard from 1SIR in the new Mandai hEll camp, even the CO complained about the food quality of the cookhouse. Nothing seems to change. Well this being Singapore, since when do military complaints against civilians are being investigated? correct me if iam wrong

You know what... we should go back to the days of the British Army during the Napoleonic Wars. Each section or squad will "mess" together , I believe that's how the term "mess" came about. A group of soldiers will be issued rations for one week, including fresh rations. These are mainly uncooked , raw food. The soldiers were given time in the barracks to cook their own meals.
How the section does it is that they will nominate one person to be the cook and he will be excused from some duties to prepare food at each meal for his mates. If the section so wishes and thinks it is good to combine, they can approach another section to combine their food rations together for a big cook-out.
For the NCOs and officers, who get paid more... they actually pooled some money together to employ servants to cook for them and had a room or tent or place reserved for their "mess".
How about this in the SAF ? ...and you learn about rationing and budgeting ! -
