Infantry need mortar for what?

I suddenly thought of something and realized I don't understand.
We know there is a mortar platoon in infantry and AI unit. For the former, they belong to Sp Coy. Not sure for the latter.
Here is the question. If every coy. has the FO .. who needs the mortarmen? Obviously the FH2000 more power than the 120 right? Someone told me the AI mortar even smaller! -

FO belongs to coy. estab. So FO wears blue beret or green/black beret?

1. Mortar can be used to provide fire support for REALLY REALLY close ranges. P
2. It is easier to request for support that is a coy or bn asset, than to get support that is from a division asset. Not every sect comd or PC that requests for 155mm fire support will get it. But, requesting for mortar fire is easier since its a lower level asset.
3. Partly linked with 2. Mortar has a faster firing rate. In a way, they react faster, and can drop some serious HE sh!te at closer ranges. On the offensive, u can use mortar to keep certain strong points pinned down or ducking for cover. Or even cut off the enemy's escape route for really decisive engagements, while the tuber artillery can pound the objective itself.
4. Mortar on soft skinned targets is more effective and cost efficient. Tube Arty on mechanised, armored targets. -

i think SA elements can only be authorized by Div Comd.
and time taken for order to get through from Bn to Div too long for real time operations -
mmm FOs wear blue beret and they residue in arty units, they only join the manoeuvre for exercises.
mortar 155 and all fire support assets go thru FO/FSO. the PCs can't really call for fire unless authorised. minimum OC for coy level. -
I never said PCs call for fire support. They do the requesting nia. =D
Indirect fire support is not something that can be taken for granted, so they must be used to maximise effciency. -
Call for fire support from arty very ma fan. must go thru OC then OC go thru CO then don;t know to who, then can get arty support so troublesome. Where got motar and still support for the unit for any attack in shorter time......
Arty to somehow for targets like armour veh of trenches.......If I am not wrong... -
By the time arty request clears all that red tape, it'll be the next world war already.

Since FO and his GA are in company HQ .. shouldn't it be the OC requests artillery fire from him? I'm not sure if the OC requests for mortar fire .. does he have to go through the FO? -
If i recall correctly, US ARmy has a Fire Support Team at company level. They call it the company FIST.
The PC can relay fire support request coordinates through their IVIS or whatever system they use. The FIST would have access to whatever artillery assigned to their sectory of operations, usually defined by phaselines.
Under that system, I think its easier to get fire support for the troops on the ground.
Then again, americans got lot more arty and mlrs to spare. haha. -

doesn't work in SAF.. we don't have so much firing assets.
that's right. rightfully FO should be next to OC. OC will ask FO to call for fire.
