I went to SOCE for an engineer course a couple of years back. On the first day, there was the obligatory introduction talk by the course commander (or whatever he is called). He went on about what we are here for, what we will learn, about how we were supposed to address anyone with the rank of SSG and above 'sir' (wahahahaaha - dream on) blah blah blah...zzzzzz.
Some time later I was rudely awoken by someone diggin his elbow into my side. I woke up feeling annoyed, yet refreshed. No matter, I was more than ready to tackle lunch at the canteen. I stretched myself as per SOP and was about to relieve my aching arse when it occured to me (and the others) that the lecture was not quite over. It seems that we were to watch a video of some sort. So we sat our arses down and awaited the screening with trepidation...
At first we did not know what we were watching. There was footage of many garang looking (wayang) combat engineers doing sai gang of some sort...then it dawned on us that we were watching an MTV. Specifically, the Combat Engineer* MTV.
GOD t was absolutely ghastly. I do not remember the lyrics but I am sure it was very Garang. Too bad the singer sounded as gay as the village people. Ditto for the tune. This, combined with footage of many many combat engineers wayanging in the sun made for a very very -interesting- experience... Oh how we laughed afterwards. Great days, those.
*Dunno if it was the Combat engineer song or SOCE's song. -
I remember one day back when i was a botak at hendon when the whole coy was trucked over to Changi Naval base to watch a rugby match between the engineers and the formation. Wah ! ... most of the engineers chaps were so big sized they looked like sumo wrestlers ... while we had those scrawny kantang JC type chaps ......
needless to say we got demolished .....
