Here's a good one just for comparison ... in the 80s, no mobile phones, no GBAs and even magazines like Loaded or FHM or Maxim were not around then.
What did old soldiers do to kill time during office hours ? Particularly when some OCs did not even allow the NCOs and officers ( in the company) to "rest" in their bunks or mess.
1) Play carrom in the common room in the company line
2) Chit chat
3) Sit in canteen drinkin teh tarik
4) Try to chat up canteen girl and woman
5) Waiting for girl friend to phone the only phone in the company line !
6) Read the Straits Times cover to cover ( only one ST copy... lucky only a few were keen to read).
7) health fanatics went jogging / exercise / or went swimming (camp had a pool). -

Just like any army, I suppose. But then real war will be like this too. And most people took the time to mix and chat with friends. That's how camaraderie is built up too. Not just in the field but during such boring hours. -
