ADF men usually in force for 3-4 years already and its 3-4 years of outfield and training. SISPEC instructors are just fresh pass outs.
For me, i had to explain to my CSM and PC why SAF uses mils rather than degrees.

From then on, they never dared to disturb me on anything to do with topo and navigation.

WHat i mean is ..... what is mils? how was it derived?
Let me cut the story short lah...
Mils is short for milli-radians.
If you learn from school, one circle is 2-pi. So 3.14 x 2 = 6.28.
It would be too much trouble if you use 6280 for a full circle. So the NATO-side military round up to 6400 so that the quadrants can be at 1600, 3200 and 4800.
Russians round down to 6200.
