Aiyah, 18 can lawfully get you into discos lah. Well this is singapore. Land of stupid laws and lawmakers.
I believe that our laws will keeps us in order, but these laws or rules are preventing us from maturing into a responsible society.
e.g, yesterday under 17 yrs old not allowed out in the streets after 11pm or they will be questioned if seen.
White elephants kicking up a fuss
speakers corner is just another white elephant, toe the line and mata will swarm all over you.
Those govt scholars....

For the society as a whole, the curfew on the 17-year old rule may not seen to be so bad afterall. Moreover, 'curfew' is quite a strong word. The police are mainly task in looking at informing the parents of late-stayers and not imposing a mandatory stayout. You may wish to refer to today straits time article whereby parents are supportive of the idea although our youngsters shoo it.
In the cases of the white elephant and the speakers corner, the impact on a multi-ethnics SG or disruption to our peace and stability are enormous if not properly handled. Were the offenders charged under the full scale of law? Routine questioning were just being carried out instead.
Although laws may often seem harsh if wrongly misinterpreted or rationale not explained clearly to its citizens but the legislators do have the benefits and welfare of the society in mind.

Hence, there is no law saying when you can fark gal, but there is law saying girl under 16 cannot be farked.

I agree that most 18 year olds really aren't that aware of politics and the serious issues behind it.
But most are old enough to follow the order "charge!"
It's ironic isn't it?
I guess that is why NS units aren't sent for peace keeping missions. But if a real war broke out and it got really desperate, let's face it, anyone who is old enough to carry a rifle and can pull the trigger will be pressed into service regardless of age.
If our backs are up against the wall, I wouldn't be surprised if the NCC gets a role as well. -

I, for the record, do not earn millions of dollars each year being the Minister, no do I have the urge to be a Minister.
