the time you need your helmet most, is the time when you dont have it on.
as already posted above, its not for direct hits - never was..
jungle hats, garrison hats, boonies, etc, will never afford you the same level of protection.
when the environment is deemed safe enough to take off the helmets, then by all means do so.
i've thanked my lucky stars for my helmet when i got hit underneath a 747

abseiling during assault training.
on a fast drop got snagged on my holster and subload and got swung headfirst into the fueselage.
i also saw a guy knocked flat out when charging out of a apc. if he didnt have a helmet on he'd be missing the top of his head. -

I remember sitting at the tail end of a 5 tonner. With helmet on, SBO + m-16 i think I weight approx 78kg?
We hit a bump... my whole body went vertically up, ass lifted off the bench, and my head hitting one of the overhead bars of the tonner.
I love my helmet, especially with angry drivers behind the wheel. -

Actually if you haven't tried it, the helmut if adjusted properly can be used quite comfortably as a pillow just by wearing it while you sleep on the ground.

got hit once with a changkul to the head when we doing defence exercise in SISPEC. we were back to back when he suddently raise his changkul and hit my head lucky go helmet got a bad headache though

Helmet very important.....When oversea training in Aust one of my platoon mate hit but a fallen dead fall......He looks very stunt......And in most training with armour veh, I alw get hit by the butt of the MG.....Lucky got mine helmet too.......

same here, i will make sure i got my helmet,
i remember i was hit by a falling beam being dismantled by something clown who didn't check if the beam on the other end was unscrewed. The beam was those used in construction scafolding.i was helping to dismantle the stands after NDP 2003
The whole bean came swinging like a pivot, the beam struck my helmet as i was dismantling something below and got WEDGED into my helmet,
so i am thanking my lucky stars i am still alive. -
helmet also got purpose...to collect the cartridges after live-firing....
