Will a downgrade affect your promotion and future prospects

  Hi, I have a friend from the Navy. He currently is suspected to suffer from slipped disc, but not confirmed yet. If confirmed, will he have to be downgraded Will this affect his promotion and advancements if this is the case and he's an officer.

  The downgrade might be temporary or permanent, depend on case.
  
  Promotion, depends on his usefulness after. Kinda like if you can't do your job, you won't be promoted at work right?

  but i think one of them cancelled his contract... because he got his leg amputated.
