Abolish NS?

I got this off SDP's website and had a good laugh at the ignorance of foreigners.
The cheek of SDP to put this up on their site, i mean a UK citizen commenting on our home affairs?? NOOB

Dear Sirs,
I was interested to read the letter from Pratheesh.
I agree with Pratheesh that National Service is a waste of time, and have said so on earlier postings. I have been informed that Singapore has not been at war with another country since the Second World War, over sixty years ago, and is at present unlikely to be invaded by another country.
National Service is also a waste of the government's (and therefore the tax payers') money as the governement are spending more money on its defence budget than it needs to.
Pratheesh has suggested replacing compulsory military service with some sort of community service, but I think it would be better to abolish National Service altogether. The two years young men currently spend on National Service would be better spent furthering their educations or looking for work. (As I understand it only young men have to do National Service. I believe Israel is the only country where young women also have to do military service.)

I dont really enjoy doing NS, personally I find it a waste of my time.. but when it comes to national security... nothing is waste of time. NS is vital and necessary. That guy just can't see the big picture... we are a small county in the middle of many much larger countries... if we dont have credible force, we will always be intimated by our neighbours.

oh well .... this is something we all have to accept .... every country in the world with citizen soldiers have their share of dissenters and chao gengs .... this is not something exclusive to us alone ..... even the vauted Israeli Defence Forces ... was reading about how after about 2 decades of (very) relative peace, increasing numbers are shying away from combat posts or trying to get out of serving all together ..... -
NS is more than just NS in Singapore. It's more like a custom.
Abolishing it would be so weird. -

I hate NS... I feel sucks on what I been through... I hate some of the mangement.... I hate alot of things in my camp... but I still think it is important though.. At least malaysia wouldn't be so yaya... over so many issue.

NS is just like the floppy disk. u seldom use it but if it's not there u will feel insecure, thinking what if next time i need to use it but i don't have it. so one will prefer to have it there and don't use it rather than to need it but don't have it.

I don't use floppies anymore. To begin with, my laptop doesn't even have a floppy drive. -
How i wish NS will be abolish but i know such a scenario will never happen as soldiers are compulsory in any country.

Yes, NS consume 2 years of a guy's live. But, during this 2 year is also when a guy learn to be stronger, build rapports with each others and most importantly, protects his own country. NS may sucks during trainings and stuffs, but without it, who is going to protect Singapore? Even in schools, we learnt that the British abandon Singapore during WW2 because they need to protect their own nation. And during that times, Singapore got no protection. Do we want that to happen?

The battlefield of the future will not be fought with flesh and blood. It will be digital and .. droids or clones can fight for us. -
Only with an equivalent to the GI Bill, will we attract enough people to sign on to mitigate the loss of manpower brought about by abolishment of NS.
And we need a Reserve Guard of approximately 45,000 volunteers. -

I read some of the articles written on this NS issues. Very subjective question. Basically, I am no against the idea of having NS.
Singapore is only a small island, no resources, no oil, no metal and basically served as a ports. Who will want to conquered singapore. Is that worth? Please name it. How much singapore worth? So what are we defending? Ourselve, our family or other peoples. Give a thought to this.
Remember this is 2006 no longer 1912 or 1940, who is the most powerful nation - It's the Amercian. To invade singapore is not an easy task, geomatrically will tell you so. Any massive movement of armed forces will be detected halfway by US satelite. And any misfired bullets may result seeing missle flying. Any countries that have this idea will thinks 1000 times before any moves.
In the case of any satelite failure. touchwood.
How long can singapore last and who will be staying to fight while remoted controller commending the forces. Name one - that me. Cause I am too weak (financially) to flee in case of any "face-off". 
A M16 still worth something in the case of no food to eat.
I did not disagree with servicing NS cause it does help the shaping of the new generation. As nothing is free here, all singaporean and even PR must serve NS, and opportunity regardless of housing, career, welfare must be given priority to those that served the nation. I will definitely do my part to protect my family and fellow singaporean only.
