  hmm... actually it's not a question of supposed to or not. if he asked u nicely, and out of good will u agreed to help, i don't see anything wrong.
  
  you could also reject him since you have no obligation, but since he's your CO, the outcome of rejecting him might result in whatever consequences i don't know.
  
  so in the end did he pat u on the back and say thank you, or treat u for drinks?
