I remember once when walking at the back of the kitchen at Laikun Camp and saw this vibrating white object about waist high (it was daylight so I wasn't worried about ghosts). Upon closer inspection discovered it was maggots totally covering a trash bin that hadn't be emptied for days. Yucks!
Oh! Word of advice if you are going for training, don't eat too much for the meal before. Otherwise you will throw up from all the climbing up and down the stupid hills. My signaller and I threw up from having too big a lunch.
And pray to the higher powers you don't have to do a real medical evac, cuz you're gonna have to form teams to carry the casualty and run up and down hills to reach the nearest clearing for the helicopter landing point. Super siong! (My unit had a guy who was bitten by a big spider and collapsed. Later discovered it was from fainting from fear and not due to poison. He wasn't very popular for a few days for obvious reasons.)
But the helicopter rides were pretty thrilling. Especially when you are sitting by the door and the pilot does nap of earth flying. The Hueys flew with open doors, so you feel as if you can reach out and touch the branches of trees.
