i wonder why you have to stamp your feet during drill. Wouldn't that mess up your knees and feet if you stamp too hard for too long? also, i think it makes performing foot drill that much harder...quite unnecessarily. in the u.s. or korean army, you simply "shift" your feet together, so it's not that noticeble if your a bit early or late hehe, but if you stamp your feet one second after everyone else...ouch!
especially for recruit training...i can easily imagine the singapore drill sergeants making recruits stamp their feet again and again till they get it right!
if i'm not mistaken, it was carried over from the British army, and I think all the Commonwealth countries (including Singapore) follow this tradition.
By means of introduction, i'm from s. korea and i've worked extensively with the u.s. army stationed here in korea during my NS. I lived in Singapore before and posted in sg forums a few times back in 2003....so it's been a while i guess
