Why 16G is bigger then 22G?
Why the smaller the number, the bigger the needle?
What does the number actually signifies? -

16G is bigger..
it's just a measurement..
the army uses 16G coz it's the biggest.... painful but it allows for fastest flow of fluids into the vein.. -
Of course its bigger; any tom-dick-harry knows that.
The question is what does the number signify? Flow rate? Diameter of needle? or what?
And one more thing, the army doesn't use 16G because its the biggest; n 16G isn't the bigges; have you seen a 12G before? Its s/4 the size of a Macdonald's straw! -

btw, 16G is the biggest CANNULA used...
needles get bigger all the way to 0 gauge... but for flow in infusion, the standard has been:
22 - 24 for children
20 - 24 for post-op patients
18 for surgical patients (to allow for rapid blood administration
16 for trauma patients (for rapid infusion of large amounts of fluids) -
so long hv not poked!!

G is Gauge and it is English/American Non-SI/ISO way of measuring things.
Whenever Gauge is used in measure, it is usually related to a standard weigh or dimension.
For example, in weapons, a 12 gauge shot gun means.... the amount of lead shots that would total to 1 pound. Meaning, 1 pound consists of 12 lead projectiles of the same diameter.
So 10 gauge will equal to 1 pound therefore, the diameter is bigger thus heavier therefore only 10 will make 1 pound.
So on and so forth....
to explain why 16G is bigger than 22G, you will need to know what standard needles use. therefore you will need to first find out what 1G needle is... therefore 16 G is 1/16 of that.
This kind of measurement is found usually in US/UK.

So how big is the actual standard needle?? And its is really THE actual standard needle?

To be frank, my shooting skills are much better with the 22G than the 16G.
Ironically also, my shooting skills seem to be better outfield than in the medical center. -

for once i thought the saf made a quantum leap from 3g to 16g and even 22g!

Because the "A-series" paper follow the ISO standard. In paper, there are the A, B and C standards. Followed by American Letter/Legal size.Originally posted by nightzip:hmm...

The ISO 216 standard states that the A0 is one square metre paper with a ratio of 1 is to Square Root of two. A1 will be halve the length retaining the height.
A2 will be halve of A1's length retainined the height.. A3 will be half of A2 same height and so on.
As for photographs, it is just a standard where every increment you add an inch to the dimension...
4R = 4 x 6 5R = 5 x 7 and so on.
Please note the "R" standard seems to be found in Asia only -
