What do you think is the best 4x4 to replace our ageing LR?

My best choice: Humvee

They are supposed to replaced it with Rextons. SAF bought a lot of it already. But after certain trials, they realised it is not cost effective in terms of maintenance.
Also I think CDF was dissapointed with it. During a training in Taiwan, CDF is being ferried in the Rexton. But along the way the Rexton broke down. And no Rexton trained technician were around. In fact no one in SAF is Rexton trained. I think he got angry and decided to forego the deal.
So project is abandoned and the bulks are resold. The Rextons are used only for certain purposes nowadays. Like for Div Comd to go outfield for exercises.
Not too long ago, they decided to embark a new deal with Ford. Ford gave SAF two models to test and play with it . A 4wd SUV. And a pick up. But the testers for the vehicle gave CSTO a thumbs down. So I think the project failed again.
Humvees too big for Singapore roads bah.

Until the LR breaks down into ashes rendering it unrepairable, there's no chance in hell it will be replaced. -

It won't be replaced until the next budget day allocates SAF money, coz money is what its currently short of now.

But a military config Humvee has a price tag of US$800k, an amoured Humvee would cost as much as US$1.3M...
Personally me don't favour Humvee for SAF as it's not operational effective and not fuel effective also.... Humvee is a super fuel drinker... -

I don't think so, most probably they bought from US. Humvees are very good off road vehicles and very powerful too. I personally seen one tow out a 10 tonne truck stuck in mud!Originally posted by saline:they made their own?

Either we get new LRs or HUMVEEs, nothing else seems logical, unless the MAN light trucks from Germany or Steyr-Puch. -
In any case I think our LRs need to be replaced stat!
I don't think we intend to use them the same way the Americans use their hummers, but still if we are going to be operating in urban or LIC conditions we are going to need something a little more sturdy. You don't want to be in a LR when the lead starts flying, and against an IED there can't be any hope. -
Perhaps a mix of the Mercedes Jeeps and LSVs would make a good replacement depending on the role. It would also reduce the different type of vehicles in the SAF inventory, simplifying spares, maintainence and training.

Why need TDI/CDI Hummer? They are alerady operating using Diesel in the first place.
Military Hummer is not US$800k. It is about US$90-120k lah.
As for the LR replacement... i would recommend them to replace it with another LR. haha.
LR is not a bad vehicle, it is the drivers and maintenance crew of SAF that made it bad.
But my personal choice, they could replace it with G-wagons. -
Maybe we should just replace them with Taiwan's Ninja Vans... they seem to be everywhere at all times in all kinds of terrain that no LR can be found.

Look at the world.. everyone uses it.. from warlords in africa to the terrorists in the middle east. easily modified.. ppl movers and easily adaptable.

Actually how about the newer LR models. Replace the bodywork with sterner metal, strengthen the chasis to give it more off road ability and probably a select the higher powered engines. Should more than meet our needs. -

But these vehicles just don't have the same off road capability lah. Sat on one (vehicle comd and driver damn shiok, got air-con ), really nice on road, but off road, with every serious rut or bump, I'm half convinced the tire or some other major part is going to fall off.
