Like it or not, reservist duties will affect a guy's career, and I don't mean the normal jobs at normal positions. As a foreigner, I will not hire a someone who has to serve reservist a month a year especially if I think that its going to affect my company's performance....its sad but true and its one of those things in life...I agree fully that they have a right to impose reservist duties but employers also have full rights....

The going through of reservist is considered a rite of passage for Singaporean mailes. In fact, it is mandatory that you report for for reservist liabilities. In cases where the emploer is really shorthanded, they can put in a appeal but will be considered on a case by case basis.

Ya, I agree that if you are going for a interview, some of them will ask your pes status. If you are a Pes E or F , they will want to know why you got Pes E or F, and will it affect their company. And since before they set up their company in singapore, they should know that Nsmen need to go back for 40 days a year. If they dun agree to this rule, den I think its redundant for them to set up a company here, or they can hire all women to work for them.
If company is short handed, apply for deferment la, but its case by case de. anyway, the company should have make sure that there is another person who can cover your work. -
At the end of the day, your career is determined by how good you are at your job.
If you are bloody brilliant, I seriously doubt if a few days away for resevist training (even if it was a month) will affect your climb up the ladder of your chosen profession. -
Then if its so mandatory here, employers will relocate elsewhere where reservist is not a hindrance....Employers do have a choice too...and its shall forever be a disadvantage for local men here

Sure, Reservist obligations do affect people not working locally or working in a foreign company, especially for those people working in MNCs. Technically, someone must cover your jobscope for the period you are not around. It's hard for superiors who do not have reservist duty in their own countries to understand a NSman's obligation.
A side-note for those who are PES F, it'll depend on the medical condition you are suffering from. If it's a common and controllable problem, foreign companies prefer you to a person who has reservist duties. -

The guys in my company are always looking forward to reservist. Somemore we are all combat vocations. Even though our reservist have to go through physical stress, we all welcome the break from the mental stress at work.
