I went back to NS when I was 25 years old.My QM an air level punk at 20+ years old knew I uni grad and super lao jiao didnt really touch me.Most of the time,I was doing vehicle commander duties and touring Singapore.That was how I spent most of my remaining NS liabilities.

I think this JC-Hokkien peng dichotomy is a self-perpetuating myth. In my experience, they are the same; most would rather be doing something else. There are lazy ones, bochup ones, etc in both camps.

I had this section instructor during my recourse days, he was 25, having returned from Leeds with a MA in Aerospace Engg. And the rest of us were 22,23, 3SGs with one month or two to go before ORD.
He practically hung out in our bunk, because he couldn't get along with the JC "students" who were his fellow instructors and PCs.
According to him, it was a culture shock to be back in SAF after 5 years in England. He actually came back the night before he was supposed to report to camp, and he said, "Wah, yesterday morning I was having breakfast at Teeside Airport, and today, bloody hell, must remember to scan 11B at Tekong cookhouse" -
There's a rule stated by the Uni that says that the most they are willing to reserve a place for me is maximum 2 years. It's not easy to secure a place in the local Uni, so why throw the chance away like that. Who knows if I were to reapply again and didn't manage to get in 'cos of the quota or whatever reasons and I have to wait another year? The total waiting time would not be just a year, it would be 2 years or even more... -

Well, a conscript army will always reflect the characteristics of the society it's men derive from. What we have is a generation of soldeirs who have not experienced first hand the struggles and hardships that plagued this nation through it's early years. Thus, that identity which bares the impetus for national defence has evolved from one which requires us to defend our nation, to one which is to "serve 2 years and be done with it" (most of you know the real phrase). I'm certain many realize this need for a impetus that is far greater than the self, in other words, to rejuvinate within the young the understanding of the role of national defence and to willingly paretake of it, at the expense of individualistic aspirations. This is no easy tasks given that it is individualism which drives our economic and societal (by definition) progress.

The other day my clerk lost his pen. He kept cursing and swearing. Then he rummaged through all his drawers and other ppls' drawers. Then, he searched every nook and cranny. This went on for almost 0.5 hours.
Later, I asked him why he cannot use another pen. He replied 'cos that is his pen and he MUST use that pen, nobody else can use it.
How childish can things get?? Basically, he is just wasting time to find something as insignificant as a pen. And this guy was from a top JC (clue: something to do with the founder of S'pore). -

I don't think its fair to stereotype and generalise.
I'm from the last batch to defer NS for overseas studies; I know three other guys here. All of us have been overseas so long (almost >half our lives), that NS seems like a nice change of pace - to be able to go home.
Note the emphasis on going "home".
I've got 2 years to go before I have to serve my time, but my buddy here who is going to go back in 4 weeks has begun training since January - he actually flew back in June just to take the physical fitness test!
I agree with what some of the other forumers have said that the true nature of men will not surface until the time for it calls. Society has changed alot. Used to be men who cry = "gu niang". Now, its alright for men to cry.
People grumbling and fussing about trivialities is just a reflection of the movement of time - only forward, never backward.
Maybe you should ask the question, "how good a leader am I" or "how good a soldier am I" when you're complaining about other people complaining. Rather than just sit back, come to sgforums and vent, maybe you should take a positive and proactive step in motivating your peers and men. -

I reckon you're pretty darn good a leader if your men can talk shit like "don't want lah, sgt" and yet do it with haste - reflects that although their spirit is unwilling, they did it anyway - your command is not doubted despite their girly squeals. after 2 years of NS and out, i realised one thing!wat they taught me in NS, can put a good use outside(admin skills) and ppl is shocked!
