  Is it better to bring a fine or broad tip permanent marker? What about pencil, mechanical or wood with sharpener?

  fine tip marker and mechanical pencil (so you don't have to mess with sharpening the thing). Pen is probably more important though.
  
  Keep them cheap. So you don't mind if the "walk away".
