Should the SAF join the international force in Lebanon?

Israel objects to the participation of Malaysia and Indonesia, both of which are willing to commit a mechanised infantry battalion but both do not recognize Israel. European nations are not ready to send significant number of troops.
Should Singapore go? -
what for go, no benefit to us. also dangerous to the people going. no idea why go and kaypo for what, so as a with consideration of cost and benefits in mind, I can see this only as an activity with no benfits and serious costs.

In this case here, I concur with Uncle Teo... Our resources should be wisely spent, and we should be more focused on regional issues and not be involved in every humanitarian effort when it comes along.
I think Singapore's position is on the right track. Assistance was sent rapidly in the event of situations occuring in our region. -
Yes, but our contribution should be an all voluntary force. A mix of combat medical teams, logistical elements and perhaps a regular combined arms battalion.

Go why not? The experience for the troops in real combat is enough to spend all the resourses. Our troops are well train but definately not season. A good real life training grounds for the SAF scholars. Moreover the tactical knoledge acquire will be very useful.

We should, in principle go. However, we should not commit any troops before the UN gets its act together and lays down the ROE.

There are significant gain for our military if we send in our troops and had a successful mission. i.e. the personel sent there will have good first hand experience. Also, SAF's international prestige will rise, as along with Singapore's prestige. Furthermore, Israel was SAF's teacher, by "Asian" moral value, we should go in and return them a favour.
However, Singapore's national policy stress more on economic development rather than military. This mission is a bit sensitive and if mishandled, which is very likely, then we can run into trouble with Muslim states, namely the ones to the north and south of us. Which may in turn cause diplomatic issues leading to possible unrest which is bad for business. The mission is also likely to cause casualty, which would make things ugly and difficult for the governent to answer to the parents of these NSmen.
Weighing the cost-benefits...... Don't think we should go. -

How that translates from diplo-speak to the ground, is something worth watching. UNIFIL 2006 could be a watershed mission, if liberal usage of force and preemptive operations are permitted, and small unit commanders are given the authority to call in strikes. -
Hmmm I haven't been keeping up with the news. Last I heard, the French refused to send in more troops unless the UN agrees on a reasonable ROE. I think that is a good approach. Else, this will have the danger os putting a stain on the reputation of the SAF. Further, we are not the US. Actually, NSFs could be utilised in non-combat roles, but in operations where at least they get to see the big picture. What about combat roles? I think NSFs, exp those in infantry ought to be given an opportunity to take part in these ops. I think I would be very interested if i was still an NSF and such an opportunity came along.
Edit: I think wide participation will help boost SAF morale too. Esp among the regulars> Walk around an SAF camp and you will see lots of disillusioned regulars just simply 'getting on'. Can't say I blame them; they joined to be a soldier and all they do is admin, parades and wayang. -

Then again, it's NSF. And SAF has to bear in mind the kind of civil fallout that might happen because some parents do not understand that their sons are volunteering and not being drafted abroad.
Unless those parents are in the field of International Relations and Security, then they might totally understand and encourage their kids to do so. -

i think it's better if we keep our noses out of other ppl's business, wait ltr like US..everyday tio aim by osama and gang..anyway..u think singapore can afford to send ppl to lebanon meh ? wait tio kan by the parents ah..besides, singapore has got only human resources..cant afford to waste it on fighting a war that is not ours from the start..anyway..i aint mind going to lebanon to snipe a few hezbollah dudes..its all their fault that the war started..

The incident in Lebanon has effect on Singapore.
think about it... and do not be quick to dismiss it. We are in the GWOT, like it or not.
