Reservist NSman called up for first ICT at age 36!

Based on the "complain" bt the 36 year old below... I kinda know what COL Benedict (SAF Spokesperson) is going to reply...
He will first defend SAF saying there is some confusion by Mr Tan that Mr Tan overlooked the unit he was supposed to report. This issue is resolved by SAF and Mr Tan.
Then he will say, Reservist is for the defence of the nation and nothing comes before this. SAF is flexible with reservist training but certain arrangement cannot be considered... bla bla bla..

I WAS surprised to receive notice recently of my first In-Camp Training (ICT) at the age of 36.
How could Mindef expect NSmen to complete the full cycle of their ICT if they start only at 36? Does it mean that NSmen have to go for longer and more frequent ICTs each year in order to do so?
As most NSmen of this age are at the peak of their careers and many are in senior-management positions, going for ICT would definitely affect business operations.
More importantly, most of these NSmen would have families with young children. They have to manage both busy work schedules and taking care of the family.
I have appealed for deferment after the first request was rejected. Until today, I have not heard from Mindef despite numerous calls to the National Servicemen Services Centre (NSSC). I was told by the NSSC staff that they could not transfer my call to the person in-charge, nor could the person in-charge call me or my employer.
I didn't even know which was my unit until I called the NSSC to find out, and even then the staff do not have the contact number of the unit.

he also brought it upon himself one,must be thinking all the while that wah good sia,SAF forgot about me liao,no reservist liao,happy like fuck.If he had bothered to call up SAF when he was younger to reconfirm on his status and get into reservist faster,this would not have happened.

No joke man. Try taking ur IPPT at the age of 34 and above. Damn siong. And running the final 2,4km test. I can feel my heart going to stop pumping if I run a little too fast.

It's human nature. He got 4 years to complete his 10 ICT or gets his MR when he reaches 40 years old. Lets put our hand together and pray he pass his IPPT

yup it is human nature but it does not remove him from part of the blame.I posted this cos apart from the cock up from SAF,he must also shoulder part of the blame so he should not only know how to blame the SAF,write complains and such.He had the option then to change what happened now but did not take it so should not complain.Originally posted by dakkon_blackblade:It's human nature. yeah good luck to him,passing IPPT at age 30 is already like a huge task for quite alot of NSmen least 36-40...

I am surprised at this complaint.
Why can't MINDEF serve notice of ICT at age 36 ? The law allows up to age 40 or 50, whichever is relevant.
Most will get the full cycle so that the unit is operationally ready. There will be some that cannot go through the full cycle for some reasons. Is Mr Tan suggesting that once you reach the age of 31, and cannot complete the 10 years cycle, you are out ?
Different people peak at the careers at different age. Is Mr Tan going downhill immediately after this since he is now at his peak ? All NSF says that at age 18-22 is their peak, and they should be going to Uni. Then at age 25-30, it is their peak again to climb the corporate ladder, then now 36 is still the peak of one's career !!!
Mr Tan is probably non-multi-tasking. There is a new peak ahead, and he probably cannot see it.
What is there to appeal ? He should just go ahead to report and serve like everyone else. I think we can all recognise the lapse. I hope SAF gives a firm answer. When told to serve, do it. -

The blame lies squarely on the SAF for not calling him up earlier. I think his reservist unit needs a good talking to. -
I think Mr Tan is pissed because all along he thought no need reservist.. then suddenly one comes to him and he wants to defer it but it got rejected.
Then when he wants to further explain the situation, no one is contactable.
While the law allows it but i guess it is just unfair when ppl have reservist earlier they usually take up to 14-21 days but when you are like 36 and going for first ICT, i bet he will be mobilised for 40 days at a go.

I got a friend a few years ago never get called up after 5-6 years ORD so he called saf up and soon got himself to be recalled for reservist after me and my group of friends told him better to sort it out faster than risk late age reservist
Eg you booked for an air ticket or something and some stuff should be sent to you by a certain date,if you did not get it,do you call up and check or do you wait until last min then you blame the agency for messing it up for you?In the end who suffer? Majority you only. -

i got at least three friends who r in such a situation.
they feel they r damn lucky to be outside the system
maybe they will curse n swear when they receive the ICT letter at the age of 36 yr old oso -

cos we can never forsee what will happen to us tommorrow.
let alone things that will happen 10 over years from now. pace of life is fast and perhaps TAN spend 3/4 of his 24hrs, 7 days at work. he really wanted to call but one fine day when he received his first ICT letter, he suddenly realised he is 36 already -

Please report to your reservist unit on the specified date and time. Your NS contributions are vital for our national security.
Alternatively, you can make arrangements with your employer to get Foreign Talents to cover your duties while you are away slogging it out in our camps.
Being in senior management is no reason to shirk your responsibilities. The government has been far sighted enough to bring in Talents that can do your job in your absence. That is why they are called 'Talents'.
And being a meritocratic society, it is only natural that if your employer finds your locum/temp/foreign talent better suited to your position, then you may well find yourself out looking for a job.
Please reflect on how you can be better than your temporary replacement, by either being paid less, getting less benefits, working longer and longer hours or declare part of your salary as the company's profit.

The analogy you cited is not quite right. It is not beyond the realms of possibility that Mindef would 'forget' or not need to call people up. Otoh, if I book an air ticket, and the flight is imminent, it is beyond the realms of possiblity that I can get on the plane without a ticket or an E-ticket. Hence, I would call the company can give them a bollocking they won't forget.
Anyway, there are people in the Army paid to make sure there are no admin cock ups. As such, the onus is on the Army to make sure that their employees earn their keep.
Of course, an argument could be made that he should have been prepared to come back anytime before he is 40 since those are the terms. However, I think point of contention here is that the Army could probably have called him back earlier avoiding the current situation. Why did they not? Was if avoidable? If so, why wasn't it avoided? After all, it is not inconceivable that a 36 year old man would have trouble playing soldier... -

Dear Mr. Tan,
We note your complaint and we appreciate the sarcrifices made by NSmen such as yourself.
However, the needs of the nation must take precedence over the needs of the individual. NSman callups are determined primarily by the manpower needs of the NSman's unit. As such, Mindef is not able to guarantee that all NSmen will complete their 13 year cycle well before they reach forty years old.
Of course, we try to minimise the inconvenience caused to NSmen. Yet operational needs are such that some NSmen, such as yourself, will only be called up years after they ORD.
We ask Mr Tan to be more understanding. Should Mr Tan wish to discuss matters further, he can call CPC at xxxxxxx

I can't blame him yet I dun see how his complaint will end up positive for him.
