I personally feel that more can be done to improve National Service.
The current climate of immigration is not too good for national defense IMHO. -

always remember, don't assume u are safe from reservist until u are 40 years old. don't think that u are safe even if they don't call u back for years. even if u are 39 years old, u are still liable to be called back.
it is stated very clearly already in the NSman booklet when u ORD. annoying it might be, but what can we do right?
My case is an example i still remember before my enlistment,i call up cmpb after three months of graduation from poly asking when is my enlistment date,they just reply soon,i call again and again but still no news,in the end i waited for one whole yr to be enlisted,i mean the system really need to improve loh or maybe the system is there but the PP(well i dunno lah so no comments).It a waste of my time leh i could be working full time now finishing my degree instead of having to wait for 1 more yr to take my degree.
For my other friend even worst he take the medical checkup after graduation and a week later they received their enlistment letter and the date of enlistment was a day later wahh he have to rush to prepare his stuff sia really jia lat.

i'm guessing most probably the administrative side consists of NSF clerks. not saying that NSF clerks are no good. but let face it, they are only getting $350 a month, no one getting this miserable salary will be motivated to work their ass off.
if what i'm suggesting above is true, then i think it's about time they really consider hiring professional staffs when it comes to enlistments and NSmen matters. -

I got some frens from JC, they keep complaining about NS and well as a spec, i am pretty irriated by them too. High up in the air etc but then again, its valid don't they..and somemore we seening the regulars ( not all lah) are slacking thru with the pay of basic 2k..can't we complain?
I am not saying ns is a worthless thing. Protecting the country is a must for everyone. Its the time frame. Spending 2 years in a servicem, getting the $$ that we can't even support ourselves..how can the govt do about it? well we pay them $$ to think..

And please old birds of saf pls dun say allowances was lesser last time,the costs of living last time is much lower , i.e a plate of chicken rice is cheaper last time,it consider very good to have a degree last time but nowadays down the road there are full of Uni grads.
To conclude,to maintain our pink ic,we just have to LL suck thumb and serve our NS liability as well as reservist loh and we are much more fortunate to live here compare to some other countries lah. -

Such replies are almost always a norm. But in this case, I did not even think it warrants a reply. Why waste newspaper spaces, when we already know the answer : just serve as you are ordered to.
I don't know why the Editor selected to publish this complaint in the first place. -
i dont understand why he is even complaining.
he has already gotten away with it for so many years. all he has to do is answer his call for the next 4 yrs.
how difficult is that?

the person who wrote the letter was surprised to receive his first ICT at age 36 and make a big fuss out of it. I am even more surprised that he only realised it now that he had reservist duties to fulfil. as long as one doesn't reach 40 years old, one is always liable to be called up. simple as that.
