Eh civilians are the HIGHEST in rank leh, should be the other way round, soldiers should give up seats to civilian, roger? I'd say keep it open at least for today to give her a chance to respond. If there's no word from her by tonight, by all means close it.
And before this thread does get closed, I'd like to toss in my own S$0.02. Personally, I don't expect others to worship the ground I walk on when I'm in uniform, and I neither do I expect large adoring crowds who clamour for me. I don't expect people in uniform to be treated like kings.
However, mistyblue, I don't expect you to be treating them with such contempt either. To be belittling all their efforts is surely not the voice of one who is grateful. It is precisely due thanks to people who stay awake at night guarding our camps and doing outfield exercises that you get to sleep in your warm comfortable bed. When I'm out in the jungle doing a 24-km forced march at 2am in the morning with 26kg of full battle gear on my back, I do so hoping that my efforts will go some way in keeping our country safe.
I agree that the SAF is one big wayang, but hell, we do one heck of a wayang. It is precisely because of our wayang kulit that no one dares to mess with us, and we can be a safe and prosperous nation.
And look at what our wayang has cost us - we've had people entering the army alive but leaving it dead. People have been KILLED - the dunking case comes to mind. Numerous others have been injured. I should know. As a medic spec I've had to do life-saving intervention on several occasions.
Seriously, it would do you a whole lot of good to try to put yourself in the shoes of those NSFs, NSmen and regulars who sacrifice so much to keep you safe. -

I believe the reason why some may feel that soldiers in Singapore are not getting or should not be getting any respect from civilians is because perhaps our soldiers and country is far too young for it. We may be successful on our own with what we have achieved through half a century and be proud of it. Our soldiers may have played a role (no matter how minor it may be as compared to other countries) in the region's security or peace keeping missions but to some people it may take more than that to earn a respect.
Soldiers are not models nor the hunks you see during manhunt or fashion show on stage.
So for those who feel that our soldiers are sissy ah guas i hope one day we can prove it otherwise. As for those soldiers who have served or are serving and find that civilians give you that scrutinizing look or disrespect despair not because over that uniform you are wearing is a job or duty that earns an honor greater than any respect anyone will give you.
There are soldiers who are committed to what they do and they did their best in silence without the need for any cheers, salute or praises. There are soldiers who died during missions or trainings and the best respect they can get is the cover of our nation's flag and the shots from the rifles honoring them for their deeds and sacrifice. This in itself is the respect a true soldier can get that nothing can ever balance with on the other side of the scale. -
SAF is not a small part. its THE most important factor in defense. without it, any half wit with a standing army can come and pillage our homes. pillage is such an elegant word to use, isnt it? need i remind u that it means that women would get gang-r4ped (until they die or when the enemy chooses to kill them), men slaughtered in droves, and children killed for sport?
and the riches of the land taken by the enemy who inflicts much pain and death upon our countrymen. ie to say, mistyblue, u will really have to start to count how many grains of rice u consume!
i dun remember a woman giving birth stopping an army from pillaging the city she lives in just from the act of giving birth. of course, unless u wanna argue that if the child (who happens to be a boy), grows up can prevent it from happening. however, this is a circular argument as one can argue that without military defense, theres a high possibility that this boy wouldnt even have the chance to live in the first place.
its just like typical women who act high class and pretend to be intelligent to belittle the sacrifices made by our NSFs, Regulars, and NSmen.

when the elites of the combat engineers are doing training in a suffocating bomb suit that weighs close to 30kg plus strenuous operational training, that can end up with the serviceman with a much higher than average body temperature potentially leading to injuries, or even death... or even running in a mask and cant breathe properly due to the air being regulated through the mask... wat r u doing? giving birth?
when the combat engineers do live demolitions firing, that can blow them up to pieces if something were to go wrong, were u giving birth? wat about when these elites go for real world operations that puts their life at real risk, were u giving birth again at that time?
these activities happen to these same people A LOT, whereas u dun give birth EVERY OTHER DAY.
in addition, tank commanders risk their lives by being half in and half out of the tank constantly. if the tank does not negotiate the terrain well, it may flip and the tank commander can be so mashed up that even his own mom cannot recognise him.
last but not least, never forget the elites in the SAF... the SOF and the commandos do extremely high risk trainings to ensure their operational readiness in the event that their services are required. yes, all to defend the nation, and ingrates like yourself.
show the servicemen some bloody respect.
without the SAF, there isnt ANYTHING for anyone to defend anymore. -

I won't be surprised if she has already given up on us 'narrow-minded boys' whom she thinks are demanding far too much when we ask not to be treated with contempt.
My sergeant during my combat medic course once told me, 'There will be those who don't appreciate your efforts no matter what. But just continue doing the right thing.' And true enough, there were those dumbass men who continued to berate and bully me even as I aid them when they're injured. I attend to them even though they act that way because it's the right thing to do.
The same lesson applies here as well. We can't really change the hearts of everyone, but we can still continue doing the right thing. When you're walking 24km with a 30kg battle load at 2am in the morning, just remember that regardless of whether or not people are appreciative of your efforts, you are still doing the right thing. It is precisely because of your sacrifice that others get to sleep soundly at night.
Do your job and do it well, and there will be nothing on your conscience. Just continue doing whatever that you know to be right. -
