...in the general view. Just imagine what will happen to teenagers nowadays if they don't go through hardship, what will these teens become without any discipline. What will happen to the society and morals?
Although certain restraint is present in everyone who serves NS, sometimes it can be really f'ed up, but overall to the societal citizens I feel it's beneficial. -

i believe NS is a good experience for all boys. some might say it's a waste of time whereby one can be using this period of time to furthur their studies or start working. but surely we don't have to rush to do these thing right? we can still do them after NS.
in fact NS can be a good time to get to know more friends, learn new skills like teamwork, organising and people management.
sure some of u might complain of unfair treatments, incompetent superiors, lack of freedom etc, but aren't all this also a good experience? not everything we encounter in life is a smooth walk in the park. whatever we do and experienced is a lesson in life to better prepare us for greater challenges in future.

National service has it pros and cons. Most male when they are in their teenager age think that they could do whatever they want and get over with it. But in the Army, it a total difference thing. Could see most of my friends, change quite alot since being enlisted into the army. More reponsible and rational in their thinking. i have never ever once regret serving my ns. the invaluable experience toughen me up as a man. i must confess b4 i enlisted, i hadthe 'wanna chao keng' mentality, but my mindset completely changed after i went in. IMO, NS is definitely a very important lesson in our lives. but i still feel the duration too long liaoz..

I agree with you all, That National Service is very important. Anyone has does some homework, on their system?
I not aware that once the mindset are broaden it will never return to its path. -
the only thing i'm concern about is getting bad influence from those around u in NS. for example picking up smoking, getting into trouble etc.

But there is also an increasing trend and a cause for worry that Army now is getting soft on freshies too.

made me realise how family members are way better then the selfish ppl in there..
and btw i feels gals should serve NS too..
but as nurses in hospitals rather than in army camps

No doubt its good for the individual and maybe the nation on the whole. Can make more frens, learn that unfairness is everywhere etc.. But is it really worth 1year 10mths of our lives not? It always bothers me to see my non-ns frens who are busy pursuing their degree in Uni while I'm hen-ta-ta-ki-ing on the knoll. This is just my 2cents worth. No offence.

NS is good but too much time was spent doing nothing towards the end of our NSF life. So much time lost...

u can get ur degree anytime. and hell, u have the rest of ur life to work. so why gan jiong? -

LTA. Still studying in uni. My estimate was very conservative and I didn't benefit from the pay rise when I was serving my NSF.... -
I am curious dude. In the army you also making money. Tries to be positive. Let say you ah a leftenan your pay in the army is about $1000 PLUS. Corect me If i am wrong?

Money is not main issue. Granted that I may have a lot more pay than most, but that pitiful allowance is seriously not enough compared to the career advancement and experience we could have gotten otherwise. Officer or men, it doesn't matter. We can all do much more if we're not serving NS.
Plus 2 years of NSF disrupts your learning. Most of my friends find it hard to cope with university when you don't use your brain for so long.
