Anyway, NS is not as good as what most would claim it is but I still feel it is necessary. It is essential and tragically couldn't been avoided given Singapore's circumstances.

But seriously I don't think people become more mature after NS. Maturity seen in ORD personnel is probably due to their age. We'll all reach that stage of mature given the time. Those who don't, never will. -

I don't think NS is the factor that let guys get mature it just that the age that matter.And i think guys only start to settle down n think when they really need to start working to support themselves or saving to get marry,NS is not a factor,in fact it has wasted my 2 and a half year,i could have finish my degree and working full time if not because of NS,or rather all guys have wasted their 2.5 yrs,could have use it to work and gain working experience or studying,instead of learning how to assemble the M16, how to run fast

i will have to agree with kaiser's point.
if NS makes a person more matured, this means that without NS, the person isnt matured. therefore, every male in every other country without conscription is not matured.

NS... stops people from furthering their studies
NS... causes the same people to lose touch with wat they studied
NS... stops people from working outside
NS... defending the ingrates (the other 2million singaporeans, who think that giving birth = NS, when every woman in every other country gives birth too! )
NS... gives gals the excuse to leave the guy ( "oooh, we have too lil time together... and theres this guy who understands me more" )

To be fair, NS does not make one mature. In fact, it is the soldier, himself chooses to be mature, not the another way round.
Because, I seen my fair share of ginnas doing NS, ORD as ginnas and doing their reservist still a ginna.

well i think if people in singapore need to be forced (doing what your superiors/instructors tell you to do), then wheres the self discipline going to come in.
i dont think you need army to know how to manage time, manage a healthy lifestyle, achieve outstanding physical results.
it all boils down to whether you want to or not.
i am however, not going to say army is bad, because if i try to look at it from a different point of view, i have good stuff to say about it. otherwise, if i had a choice, i would choose to not serve ns. -

The SAF has moved on from a poison shrimp concept to a forward posture force which will operate further from home in the future.
All our current equipment is meant to be expeditionary in nature, allowing us to perform HADR missions relatively fast, not to mention active patrols with other navies in the South China Sea and Straits of Malacca.
Yea, I could think that 2 years was a waste, but then again, life is not cheap nor easy to live. -
I think we should all face it... Saying that NS makes the guys mature faster is just some nice story fed to us all. To emphasis that NS is so good because it make us gain that 2years of valuble experience and friendship is also pretty much crappy.
Are you telling me that if I don't do NS, I will be some immature kid? You are giving NS too much credit if you know what I mean...
2years in NS is nothing too special too. 2years spent in Uni or at work will probably provide the equal but prehaps different type of experience and friendship too. It is only natural that after 2years you are bound to gain experience and friends.
I hope that TS has actually done NS before making his statement or I'll be pretty
NS is not good, its just that we don't have a choice so we try to con ourselves into believing it is. NS is nothing special really. -

yes u are welcomed to air your feelings and comment back, but don't be too quick to shoot back on other people's point of views and only focus on the negative side. unless u have live through every part of the SAF, otherwise it is better that u don't generalise based solely on your own experiences.
and for your information, i have made some of the best friends while in army, and i treasure that friendship.
