Army is compulsory in which countries?

  In which countries is serving millitary compulsory and in which countries it is voluntary or as an occupation?
  
  Does anyone know about those in Taiwan, Malaysia, Indonesia, India, China, Korea, Japan, Hongkong, etc.
  
  I know Singapore is not the only country with compulsory system.

  in taiwan, it's easy for one to be excused national service. for example having flat foot, bai ka bai chu etc.

  studying overseas is also one.
  
  best part, you can study overseas, renounce your citizenship. But after graduation, go back taiwan and reclaim your citizenship.

  in taiwan , u can defer many years .
  
  some artise in taiwan study uni or colledge then repeat cos lack of time to study .
  
  they dowan go ns so soon , so dun dare withdraw from school .
  
  singapore cannot defer too long .
  
  and taiwan army hor , clerk is selected from those that r medically fit for NS .
  
  a bit problem no nid serve NS .
  
  in singapore PES E or C , in taiwan means PES F .
  
  as for escaping NS by studying overseas , if u come back to taiwan , will get charged .

  You should see Russia's National Service. They call it conscription. Got a Russian friend who is extending his studies just to stay out of Russia so that he does not die freezing in the big unknowns of the Siberian tundra.

  national service... conscription.. IS the same thing. so is the word "draft"

  I thought Iceland doesn't have a standing army, with the possible exception of a peacekeeping force? All it has are police and coast guard units.

  I think the law on this was and is ambiguous.
  
  I personally met a few taiwanese who escaped NS and renounced citizenship and studied in overseas University. After they graduated, they worked overseas and realised prospects aint good and returned to Taiwan.
  
  In taiwan, they worked under a employment visa for few months at the same time applying to reclaim their Taiwanese citizenship.
  
  They got it.
