What do you mean?Originally posted by Herzog_Zwei:First place, what's your professional specialty?
I was looking for qualifications I can obtain in the navy. Not what is required.Originally posted by ^spidee^:According to this website: http://www.mindef.gov.sg/imindef/mindef_websites/atozlistings/navy/careers/careerops.html, the qualifications are:
* GCE 'A' Levels
* Polytechnic diploma
* University degree

But seriously I got a friend who's a regular Navy officer. Just tell me what you are looking for specificallly and I can ask him the next time I see him.
But I am not asking if I can join the navy - That can be resolved with a few emails or telephone calls.Originally posted by Gordonator:the least u can do is to tell me your age, your rank and your last served vocation first before we can advice u on anything.![]()
Wah....so many questions....one thing I know though, is that there are opportunities aplenty for overseas training and attachments, for my friend is not in Singapore quite a lot of the time.Originally posted by scabstermooch:Well...I can swim.
Basically, I would like to know:
- What qualifications I can obtian in the navy. For instance, do I get sailing/etc qualifications?
- What training must you undergo to become a naval officer. I know you need to go to OCS etc but I am looking for specifics. Eg. To be a recce commander, you need to do Recce commander's course which entails loads of topo and a very very long walk.
- What is the career structure like? What are the chances of getting to command a ship?
- What is the work culture like in the navy?
- And, I can't find any information on salaries online. I wonder why?
- Oh, and really What are the opportunities like for overseas travel/attachment?
Thanks.
Yes, I would like to know what I am getting myself into. The not being in Singapore part is very very tempting. Thx!Originally posted by dakkon_blackblade:Wah....so many questions....one thing I know though, is that there are opportunities aplenty for overseas training and attachments, for my friend is not in Singapore quite a lot of the time.![]()
Why would you say that?Originally posted by Gordonator:u sounded as though the navy will definitely accept u.![]()
opsec? lol... im 99999% sure that our potential aggressors subscribe to Jane's, so im sure that they will know more about us than.... well, ourselves (gnd man, not ppl 'up there')! haha...Originally posted by scabstermooch:In addition, if it is not against opsec, how many ships are there? The reason I ask is because if a person signs on as a naval officer, he will be naturally aspire towards oneday takeing command of a ship. However, as the saying goes, you can't have too many indian chiefs!
just a feeling u are giving me and the things u ask.Originally posted by scabstermooch:Why would you say that?
Hmmm -Ok.Originally posted by Gordonator:just a feeling u are giving me and the things u ask.
anyway why don't u just call up the navy recruitment centre and ask them? i believe they can give u better answers than us.![]()

Thanks for the info!Originally posted by o-lua:ermm.
you will go through an entire different package.. although in all saf.. there's running blabla bla... one thing in Navy, no soc is required.
you will be posted to panglima then ocs.. dont really no the sequence.
wad do u mean by sailing?
sailing actually means, slipping off, and making way out of habour.
you will need to learn rules of the route, like starboard = right, port = left.
it's not all on commanding ship first.
there's 38 rules, which u will have to memorise like hell.
in the rules, you need to even memorise angles of lights.
for eg. port(115.5), starboard(115.5), mast and stern.
then need to memorise morse codes.
and also need to memorise flag meanings,
for eg. alpha = diving ops.
quebec = quarantine, or recall to mother vessel.
then, need to learn knots and hitches.. and the level of knots is higher than tt of infantry.. basically, ropes and knots are the essentials of navy..
not missiles..
you will like spend hourse burning the nylons and creating splices..
ermm.. of coz there are interesting things like wad u see on tv.
but wad i actually mentioned is only the MOST basic course..
unless, u are ok with ropes and memorising.. i think u need to read more and think twice..
it's not really like advertisement la.
haha. the real job is maintaining..
Aah the law...I've found it to be very very tedious and am not sure that I want to go through life doing something that is at odds with my character.Originally posted by LazerLordz:Scabstermooch, why not aspire to be a SAF Legal Officer in RSN HQ? If I remember correctly, you are taking a post-graduate law degree?
Hmm, best you think through this military career thingy too.Originally posted by scabstermooch:Aah the law...I've found it to be very very tedious and am not sure that I want to go through life doing something that is at odds with my character.
TBH, i never intended to return to Sg after my studies in the UK. I've even contemplated joiining the British Army as a soldier. Alternatively, I thought I would take a year off and just travel and find where I want to go in life.
Unfortuantely, personal circumstances forced my return to this glorious land.
I've now found myself in a rut: I hate the course and have absolutely no motivation...
The law...it is something I can go back to should I want to. But I am at an age where I've come to realise the decisions I make now will dictate how I live my life. Hence I am exploring other career options.
Ya - I know. The military is seldom like what is depicted in the ads/movies. Thus, I am trying to find out as much about my options as possible.Originally posted by LazerLordz:Hmm, best you think through this military career thingy too.![]()
