haha, well, it does feel more comfortable wearing those non-SAF issue boots and stuff. Besides, those brands has the customers interest at heart and therefore will make things that are good and worth the money. Those made for the SAF are only good to the government, that is cheap and mass produce.
Well, I believe that if the SAF allow people to use non-SAF stuff for their gear, that would increase the morale of the soldiers. -

Well, for starters, you may feel more comfortable in the goods that you ahve bought and may indirectly affect your morale. but i think altama boots is the most common..my encik wears bates....some of my men wear it too -

I don't think you are issued LBV so you can look smart on parade. Use it !!

I am for good quality stuff, which helps in operations and training. More comfort, more durable = more confidence.
But please check before you start using them. I heard that if you use non-approved equipment and you get injured during training, there is no compensation. This is good to prevent soldiers from buying their own lousy stuff and endangering their lives. But it also prevents soldiers from getting the best and excel in their training.
In future, I would like to see the SAF putting up a specification, then allow vendors to qualify their products. These approved products can then be on the eMart shelves and the soldiers are free to decide how much they want to pay for their needs. Its free market, isn't it? Why should SAF decides to buy lousy stuff and insist the soldiers use them. Don't soldiers have the basic rights to their equipment ?
The reason why I am saying this is because I just used some leftover credits for green towels which I thought I could use at home. The towels have to be washed separately because the colour runs. Then my toilet looks like a green dog has dropped its fur on the floor. My comb is also filled with green stuff. Now, I don't even think the towels are good enough for rags. WTF ........... no use buying cheap stuff when you cannot even use them. -

During my NSF time i did spend abit to better my equipment, having a good torchlight, field pack with Lock&lock lunch boxes (thus replacing ziplocs), among other things..
I do feel that some of SAF's items are procured with the procuring officer not knowing much of the items's quality. -
Well, maybe they should change one of the infantry Battalion into using all personnalise gears. Their Basic gear will be SAF standard issue but those who want to buy their own can do so, as long as the colour and usability is suitable for their vocation, activity. Wad do you guys think?
I think if possible, let them even customise their own guns! -
Actually, there are equipment out there that meets and exceeds the SAF requirements. There is no need to specially create them for the SAF. Where do you think the SAF gets their equipment made from ? For example, the hydration bags. Now they issue some cheap and leaky stuff. All they need to do is allow CamelBak and some other Brands to qualify their product against the SAF specifications (modified from Camelbak anyways) and then allow soldiers to choose between various Brands using their credits in the eMart. Is this very difficult ? -
hmm, im on current Gore tex boots size 9 (i wear 8.5 and i do have an extra pad under the original pad inside)
i do find the gore tex adquate for my purposes , like:
hiking
airsoft-ing
walking ard in rainy days
but i do like to know whats better than the gore tex Boots thats current issue.
hopefully the item you recommend me can also beat its price of 100 SGD (or at least justify lar.)
any recommendations/brands pls? and where to get em cheap!(at least distro lar) -
