Promotion for the NSF is to recognise his performance and past contributions during NS. Due to the onerous nature of duties for those deployed in combat vocations, they are promoted earlier than those in service support vocations.
The SAF regularly reviews the promotion guidelines, the last revision to the enlistee promotion guidelines being in 2011 and 2013. Currently, NSFs may be promoted to the Corporal (CPL) rank between the 12th and 18th month of service. The minimum service for promotion to Corporal First Class (CFC) has also been shortened in the 2013 revision.
We would also like to highlight that promotion in rank is not an entitlement: servicemen would have to meet the stipulated minimum criteria to be eligible. Unit Commanders are also given the discretion to assess if a serviceman who qualifies for promotion is deserving of the promotion at the given point in time, after considering the operational requirements of the unit. -

in fact i don't think the criteria is so stringent. maybe because your friend was from an active Bn. -

i do not know how outdated am i but is it true that new system/laws/regulations will promote those non-poly/JC men to CPL whom have passed SOC and attain silver for IPPT?

i heard of the cpl first class frm my sgt before i ord but not so for the cpl promotion for mono intakes.
i remembered one of my sgts said we got our cpl so easily due to our qualification as compared to them, having to chiong so much in sispec, but now i guess its so much easier. if according to my friend said is true, ie, pass SOC and silver in IPPT, i think we are going to see more CPLs around man. -
my friend in camp didnt pass soc ippt n didnt chiong brunei also can get lcp.. smlj..

he's an ite grad, so by asumption of our batch, at most also LCP based on appointment or performance, but he said he's getting CPL soon. he said new rule or something that pass soc and silver in ippt can liao.

but then since technicians wear coveralls most of the time, it should be easier to differentiate.
