SAF Overseas Service Medal (With Bronze Star)
A BRONZE STAR shall be awarded if such service involves hostile action or considerable personal risk. If a person to whom the medal has been previously awarded further qualifies for the award of the medal, he shall be presented a BAR to be attached to the ribbon by which the medal is suspended and also to his medal ribbon.
Notwithstanding the above, a member of the SAF who was engaged in any service referred above, who fall short of the qualifying period on account of his death or evacuation owing to an injury or other disability, shall qualify for the award of the medal if the death, injury or disability was attributable to such service.
This is new to me... wonder if anyone has heard of this... and perhaps know of anyone who has recieved this?
it sounds very much like the US Army... a star for every combat jump on the airborne wings.

i think my camp cookhouse aunties deserve a long service and good service medal. to thank them for always give us extra rice and meat when we come for lunch.

this makes me wonder if those ST guys (technicians) who goes with the detachment, going through the same danger, can be awarded with the SAF Medals ?
Otherwise, how are their sacrifice recognised ? -

25 yr medal is common for all civil servants. regardless of ministry.
SAF did, however, recently change the medal scheme
It used to award medals for 5,12,25 years and clasp/bar for 22,30 years of service.
Now it awards medals for 5,10,20,25 and clasp bar for 15 and 30 years of service...
That's what i gather from the MINDEF webbie.
In any case... we are giving medals like the US Army everything and anything also got medal... but then again our uniforms are so bare... what's wrong with a few more medals? hahaha...
And yes a i agree.. a commendation medal for long and gd service to all those SFI aunties

Purple heart is a US Medal. Singapore use Stars, as usual. Can't get more creative.

i have a question. if a soldier served for 20 years and was awarded the 5 years, 10 years and 20 years long service medal. can he wear all 3 of them on his no.1 if the occasion arrives? or he can only wear the 20 years one?

he can wear all the medals invested on him. each medal will have its rules on wearing, for example, the 10 and 20 years are the same Long Service & Good Conduct Medal, differentiated by the qualifying period, so he needs only wear the latest one with the clasp, according to the medal rules.

I feel that giving out medals is good for morale and motivation within the ranks especially if it means something about valor or self sacrifice made in battle. Unlike some of SAF medals for physical fitness cuz it is every fighting soldier responsibility to keep themselves fit and ready.I dont think the US Army have medals like Karate Black Belt or the I have been to the Himalayas to climb mountain badge.As for long service medals and ribbons,I think SAF should have a more appetizing fruit salad to be pinned on experience soldiers chests.[/quote][/i]Originally posted by scabstermooch:Oh god please don't be like the US army. now the US Army has medals for many of their overseas missions and even commendation medals for good staff work... it is a fact that the US Army is more '' highly decorated '' than the SAF.
We have our own unique badges... just like the US Army. They have the astronaut badge and some other badges like Heiborne Badge...
We have our own set of badges like those from the Engineers or even the Silent Precision Drill Badge from the MPs.
As a matter of fact, the US Army does have a badge for physical excellence. But it's a sew on/ iron on badge that is worn on their PT Attire.
Most armies/defence forces greatly appreciate fitness as a means to keep their forces battle ready... so having physical excellence badges are a norm. -
