Hello,
I am interested to be trained in the Airborne. However I would not like to be in the commandos and also not get signed on. Is it possible?
I've heard a case where an OCS graduate, who's not even a regular, but during his NS duration, he was allowed to do Airborne.
Some how I wish that the SAF could have an Airborne unit. I mean for the past 90 years, military units around the world have been using airborne infantry to secure and achieve objectives that have shaped history, such as World War 1 and World War 2.
I was interested in the Airborne, even sinced i saw "Band of Brothers".
Although the training is tough....well its funny thought to jump off a perfectly good airplane.

Air force fighter cannot do airborne course, will affect their flying performance after jumpingOriginally posted by codename4:Join the Airforce and be a Pilot. Mostly need airborne
What you mean different?Originally posted by Short Ninja:NCC airborne course is different so is the Wing.If you dont sign on then hope you get posted to Cdo otherwise if you are an outstanding commander in your NS years you could ask for the course as a reservist....by the way what do you guys call it nowadays??NS men??
Actually I think the NCC and the SAF Airborne Confidence course badge is the same. The commandos have to do combat jumps so they have a different badge (red backing I believe).Originally posted by wonderamazement:What you mean different?
I think the ninja was referring to qualifying for the Badge if i'm not wrong. From my understanding NCC cadets who go for the course are required to conduct 2 days jumps and 1 night jump... Commandos have to do a different amount of jumps... Let's wait for GedankenOriginally posted by scabstermooch:Actually I think the NCC and the SAF Airborne Confidence course badge is the same. Qualification for the basic wing is the same for all. Cdo, non-cdos, NCC. They all go through the same training and same jump of 2 day and 1 night jump in clean fatigues. It is only the spec force elements that continue with the combat jump that qualifies them for their wing backing (red/blue). For the rest its only a confidence qualification.Originally posted by wonderamazement:I think the ninja was referring to qualifying for the Badge if i'm not wrong. Seems plausible as our guards seem to be modelled on Britain's Parachute Regiment - The Paras are essentially infantry with a very arduous selection process (called P Company) and they are trained for airborne operations.Originally posted by specfore:Actually there was a batch of NSF Guards officers and specs in the early 90s that had the chance to go for parachute training. During that time there was talk of the Guards units having some kind of airborne training. It was a kind of experiment by Mindef and they allowed officers and NCOs to go try out.
One of my friends had the chance to go but was injured halfway. His mates qualified.
Ya that is correct.Originally posted by Obersturmfuhrer:Qualification for the basic wing is the same for all. Cdo, non-cdos, NCC. Thanks for clearing the doubt...Originally posted by Obersturmfuhrer:Qualification for the basic wing is the same for all. Cdo, non-cdos, NCC. Ok I have to admit that my knowledge is outdated here.NCC cadets had their wings inscribed with the letters NCC(if i am not wrong) and for them it was just a confidence course. However they do need to go for a refresher course/more jumps to qualify for the standard wing.Cdos and other units went for the same course, where got ? 2 days jumps and 1 night jump in clean fatique some more!!.Geez how could I know? I left the SAF in the 80s.Thanks for the info anyways.Originally posted by wonderamazement:I think the ninja was referring to qualifying for the Badge if i'm not wrong.
