I am a specialist currently.
I am offered an opportunity to convert to an officer.
If you are me, will you want to do so?
I am a regular serviceman but I have diploma only.
Taking into account that after the conversion I will be a farmer officer and career will ends at only 42.
Do SAF and MINDEF have any avenue to help retired officers to get a new job? -
You can always take part time degree....

For a specialist, having a degree will not push you further up the career ladder.
If successfully converted and pass out from OCS, I will jump to LTA. -
Jump to officer better.
Nowadays the SAF cutting cost by cutting down the number of WOs and senior sergeants. I say so because i have seen it with my own eyes.
I got 1 wo 3 specs given handshake already...and not because they want it. -
You should convert on IMO since you're a sign on. And of course, after that, take a part time study to get ure degree since you need it to help you gain a better rank.

I think if you switched now...it might be good and bad.
Good is that you might be able to take on a slightly different role in SAF.
But the bad thing is, unless you're a scholar type you ROA will not be as good as the rest of the officers...so if you're thinking of jumping over, you should try to arm yourself with a degree to push your career on track.
It's not that an officer's bad...but ending a career at 42 kinda sucks...IMO.
Furthermore there are quite limited cases of Specs jumping over to Officers and achieving very great success? Except for one I think... -
With a diploma, your career as an officer will only bring you so far. Heck, even with a degree, you are not guaranteed a great career cos there are so many degree holders around.Originally posted by Arena:I am a specialist currently.

And SAF only offers those high ranking scholar types cosy positions in stats boards. The rest of the officer corp are left to fend for themselves when they retire. If you are looking for a long term career in SAF, I think you are better off as a specialist with a diploma. At least your prospects look brighter what with your diploma, and a later retirement age.
The only drawback is that as a specialist you have to do sai kang that officers shun, and obviously you don't get as much respect as you do with an officer. But well, staff sergeants and warrant officers are a different pot of kettle altogether. -

It's dependent on how good your bosses are in giving you projects which make you shine, and that would help you accelerate your career, for SGTs la.

Yah, heard that SAF is retrenching WOs and SGTs who cannot make the grade for one reason or another. Think only the officer corp is safe. Nowadays SAF is no longer the iron ricebowl it was five years ago. But it is quite sad to see WOs being retrenched, they hardly know anything else other than their own job. Think what you want to do in the Army.
As a specialist, you spend most of your time executing plans laid out by the officers.
As an officer, you spend most of your time planning and making sure that your plans are executed.
The point is what do you think you want to do? Assuming that as an specialist converted officer, you most probably will spend your years as LTA and CPT. With a degree, more likely as a CPT and MAJ. See what these people are doing and do you see yourself doing the same thing.
End of the day, job satisfaction & pay will determine your direction. -
Do consider whether a private degree is recognised by SAF or not. Even if, it will be looked as a level down clompared to local degrees by SAF.

Which is why if TS wants to ensure that he gets PP2 as far as possible, he should at least aim to get his degree, when he is still 1SG. The way I see it, the future WOs of the SAF might see their role shift towards the US Army's CWOs in job scope, being technical experts and specialist "officers". -
Don't convert.
Unless you got a recognised Degree.
All distance learning degree no count.
