what are the standards of the singaporean infantry compared to those of other countries? or those of our close neighbours? eg. malaysian/indonesian/thailand.
in times of a real war. whats the role of the infantry when we already have the guards and the commandos blazing forth first?
is the infantry gonna be the one doing much of the dirty work, bearing the brunt of the war and be the most vulnerable in the battlefield?
is the army infantry widely recognised in singapore? coz everywhere i go, ppl can only think of commandos.. guards.. armor.. etc. -

but i dont think our commando formation is as big as the american 82nd or 101st airborne leh. and for the guards to be the first wave to land right at the tip of the german muzzles?
i not expert la, but is the saf reli gonna put what special forces we have on such high unnecessary risk?
arent they suppose to like hit the enemy where it hurts like hell most, and get out asap?... instead of such an open conventional attack? correct me if im wrong la, am interested to noe -
Nonsense.
The purpose of having Guards is to have a corps of infantry capable of air mobile operations. It's true, Guards are better trained in some aspects and have a reputation of being "elite" but if you think that one brigade of active Guardsmen and a couple more of Reservists Guards can tackle an entire front, you must be crazy.
The purpose of the Infantry is always to take and hold ground. Only boots on the ground can conquer terrain and this is precisely why we have so much infantry. If you read about conflicts raging round the world today, you'll find that the Infantry are bearing the brunt of the work especially in areas of Urban Terrain (you can't clear a building with a tank).
In Singapore, the Infantry are not well recognised and they are not as glamorous as Guards/Commandos. In my opinion, the Infantry is one formation that loses out on the better talents who opt to sign on because the best always aim for the fancy stuff like Guards, Commandos & Armour. However, the latest initiatives within the Infantry like POI, Urban warfare and the new Combined Arms Initiatives (I can't elaborate since it's still Classified) will go some way in raising the profile of the Infantry.
What ever the case, if we ever go to war, it won't be the Guards, Commandos or Armour that raises the flag of victory, it'll be the infantry: the poor bloody, muddy, unglamorous, unappreciated infantry. -
The standards of Infantry here are quite decent. We are not as fit and probably not as disciplined as some other countries but we know some lessons that our neighbour's guys take for granted e.g. We travel at night and as much as possible we keep off roads. Sounds simple but many of our neighbours don't follow these rules. A road-bound infantry who travel in the day are easy targets. The reason they don't follow these rules are lack of Night Fighting Equipment, lack of Navigation equipment (GPS) and basic navigation training for non-officers.Originally posted by [G]erm:hi

In times of real war, the Guards and Commandos will be "blazing forth first" but their job is to maneuvre and fly around or behind the enemy and attack them from the flanks or from behind. It will be the Infantry and Armour that maintain and fight the bloody battles at the Frontline. The infantry will move in to secure terrain, get Infantry Pioneers to take out mines and other obstacles and let the Armour move through. Infantry will bear the brunt and we will do the dirty work and yes, we are the most vulnerable but we are also the most needed. The enemy can kill off the Guards and Commandos and we'll still survive, but if they kill the Infantry, the front collapses and it's Game Over. -

Erm........I think not true leh...... Firstly, I think now for the infantry battalions, they are trained in both heli-ops and naval insertion ops, so I doubt this is anything special for Guards. The GDS orbat and the INF orbat also the same, from manpower all the way to weapons & equipment too. I think ATEC also same. My NSF pay is definitely the same as my frens from INF. Hmmm.........Guards is "glamarous" you got to be kinding with me. From my conversation with others, bothe male and female. The female will definitely know wads is infantry and she will not know wad is GDS. For the male, the typical response is "..........so, how is the feeling of standing at the Istana like?" -

my infantry unit is uo n i tell u its reli exhausting n stressful fighting room to room, block to block, roof to roof, rubble to rubble. its pretty ironic we have to specialise in this especially when sun tzu himself has said, to avoid fighting the enemy in the towns and cities.. geesh

Sometimes I think SAF needs to get back to the basics.........
When they are happily buying frigates, leo2, F-16 which is high tech and gives SG the tech edge better than the opponents. Alot of basic things are not well taken care of.
For example, INF, GDS usually travel a lot in the night and do a lot of bashing in the vegetations, but the ironic thing is, only some key personnels get issued with NVG, or NVB. Heck, we are toying around with camera balls, SAR-21 with LCD screens............., yet our servicemen are deprived of decent NVGs. Besides, NVGs are nothing special or high tech. Even Gen3 NVGs for civilian usage can be easily purchased from USA under the price of abt 1000 US dollars -

Saving Pvt Ryan & Band of Brothers?? In an Infantry unit It was more like saving some chow Pvt from getting charged and commanding Ah Beng of Brothers
