A 34-year-old Bruneian man was sentenced to six years' imprisonment and four strokes of the cane yesterday after he pleaded guilty to three charges of possessing firearms and stealing military materiel from the Singapore Armed Forces.
Mohd Junaidi bin Moksin, 34, was charged with possessing firearms consisting of a M203, M16S1 cal 5.56mm and a 40mm grenade launcher without a licence.
The second charge stated that the defendant held an Ultimax 100 mark II cal 5.56mm without a licence.
The third charge stated that the defendant stole a piece of M203, M16S1 cal 5.56mm and a 40mm grenade launcher, an Ultimax 100 mark II cal 5.56mm, a small green pouch containing a magazine, a green backpack, a radio aerial PRC 840, a green helmet, an empty magazine, a radio, a small brown bag containing wirings, sockets, some medicine, two pieces of underwear and a set of black aerial, a life jacket, an H-170 SEL Ag handset with wirings, a Racal acoustics England handset with wirings and a green sock covering a bottle of water belonging to the Singapore Armed Forces.
According to the prosecution, the defendant and his friend went to the Ang Pui Hui Quarry in Temburong by car at about midnight on November 3, 2004.
They saw a glow of light at the edge of the forest and approached the area where they saw a group of Singapore Army personnel sleeping.
The defendant and his friend decided to steal two weapons, a helmet and a green backpack containing communication sets and other items. They loaded the stolen items into the car and went back to the house at Kg Parit, Temburong.
At the house, the defendant and his friend buried the stolen items behind the house in an attempt to hide them.
Two days later, two of the defendant's friends came to the house and told him that they wanted to remove the items.
The defendant was arrested on November 29, 2005. The Police also arrested his two friends and recovered all the stolen items.
The defendant will begin to serve the sentence after serving a sentence of 17 months' imprisonment for a theft case Nov 23, 2006, ruled Chief Justice Dato Mohammed Saied and Justice Dato Steven Chong.
The prosecution was conducted by Deputy Public Prosecutor Suhana binti Hj Sudin and Suriana binti Radin and Joe Chan.
The defendant was represented by Defence Counsel Paul Foo. -

what the crap...sleeping with their weapons like that ? no guard duty? what happen if a tiger comes around and gobble them up?
Nowadays soldiers all very slack, like that how to fight war ? Nah beh, if its a group of terrorists, you see them on videotape and being beheaded liaoz.
think the CO of the unit must be court marshalled...tok about sense of vigilance...wpn genna stolen oso dun noe... -

Since the topic is about losing weapons, let me share with you guys some stories of the past.It was during river crossing that a young leftenen lost his M-16 because he didt secure it properly.Navy Divers had to dive hours and hours for days until they found his rusty weapon.Because he was one of the CO favorite officers he didt kena charge but his weekends were burned doing DO until he ROD.Another Sargeant misplaced his weapon overseas and the exercise was cut momentarily.The weapon was found as it was misplaced due to some misunderstanding between soldiers.Case closed no charge because Sargeant was an oustanding soldier....Ranger some more.So I think it doesnt matter if you are junior or senior in rank cuz it is all up to the top people whether they want to give you hell or not.

Exactly, losing your weapon during peacetime was supposed to warrant a 7-year jail term, or so it was said.
So I am very curious what happened to those whose weapons got stolen? -
well, the 7 years is more of a maximum deterrent sentence.

Nothing new here. When I was doing LRRP in Brunei, I ended up watching an infantry rover stop by the side of the road, and two majors and a LTC got out and poked about the bushes for about half an hour before driving off again.
As it turns out, some scholar had his weapon stolen by an Iban kid. Of course, our scholar didn't get charged. -

this remind me of an incident.. my section was doing navigation at brunei jungle 2 years ago.. on the 3rd day morning, 1 of my friend left his rifle at the resting point n proceed down the hill..
