I was just wondering if university graduates get treated any differently in NS i.e. do they get the chance to become officers? etc. I'm currently in my second year of university at UWA. I may be required to serve NS after I graduate...

It does not guarantee you a shot into OCS. also..ur further introduction of which specific year at The University of Western Australia may seem irking to some- there is no need to go on elaborating which uni and in which year ur in, u see.some of us folks may take ur words as a show-off.

Btw, the reason, why I meantioned what that I go to UWA was to let people know that I don't live in Singapore and thus am asking a question which may seem obvious to some of you. Stop jumping to conclusions...

I didn't say that I want to serve NS but I am considering it though. If I don't, I will have to renounce my citizenship which is not a decision to take lightly. Patriotic? I may not have lived there for long, but I was born there and have family living there. It may be a factor that comes into play when you get your unit posting. Whether or not you choose to come back, it's your call, but I hope you are well-informed of the consequences for not coming back. Those are not exactly pleasant ones, and involve a huge headache should you choose to visit Singapore in the future.
My advice, come back and serve, it's only for 2 years. Unless you are an Australian citizen by birth, then, it'll be quite illogical do serve NS here unless you intend to settle here. -

come back serve la. my office has an african indian, he went to california at 5 and he has some defect in his arms. shorter bones. but his mum wants him to come back and serve the army so that he can know more abt sg. he did told us that his mum did made a gd decision, cuz he learn alot abt sg and made alot of new frens.
if u have a degree, chances of getting to sispec and ocs will be higher only. even if u r pes c, should be able to be an admin spec. -
don't come back,stay in aust better,GST increase to 7 percent on july
Whether you be an officer or be a man also like that , also waste your two year of youth,you could have use the 2 yrs to stay in aust and work to earn more money. -

I still think TS should stay in aus,don't waste his time come back.
And to TS,undergrad really no big deal,singapore alot of undergrad,in army everyone is only differentiate with NSFS and regulars.You may even be order around by an old encik whose education level is much lower than you. -
18years? Why not apply for a citizenship there? Unless you are planning to come back to Sg to stay on.
Personally, I don't think 2years in exchange for a stay in Sg is worth it when you got an alternative, perhaps even a better one coz I now people that would give up 2years to escape from Singapore.
Anyway, why the hostility against Uni grads here. Its not like he is here to look down on you. -
It's not about whether he wants to stay on or not. If he does not come back to serve, and even if he has Australian citizenship, visiting Singapore on business in the future may land him in a huge problem, i.e arrested upon arrival.Originally posted by jianfish9:18years? The only case I've heard where the chap was free to go, was an American citizen, whom the US Embassy here raised a huge stinker for. This is just hearsay, btw.
Singapore does not allow one to give up their citizenship gained by birth unless he is 21. And NS Act comes into force when you are aged 16.5 for registration, and 18 for enlistment. This lag time of 3 years makes it impossible for one to apply for Australian citizenship, or even claim it as your primary citizenship because it is usually seen as the 2nd citizenship by our authorities, and therefore illegal to hold on Singapore soil.
This is why some army mates of mine had to come back and serve once they finished high school in either Australia or US. In TS's case, I believe he is under the old legislation where if you post a bond and apply to defer your NS till post-overseas tertiary education is complete, you're safe. -
So just to clarify with you... even if I renounce my Singaporean citizenship and become an Australian I may still have problems with the government? i.e. I may be arrested if I choose to visit the country in the future?
