What does the GDS do actually (No disrespect to GDSmen)

Actually there was at least one SIR battalion back in the 90s that did both Heliborne and Naval insertions.
I think at the end of the day, the syllabus for training will continue to change and vary as the SAF continues to update its doctrine.
At the end of the day, the Guards units are supposed to have fitter soldiers and take on more of the "shock troop" duties versus the infantry. The infantry still plays an important role, doing many of the assaults, etc. But you will more likely find a infantry unit doing defense than a Guards unit. -

i believe it should be class under the different level of mission. between GDS vs commando and infrantry.
As for skill set it feed into the arm forces structure. -

For INF the movement of troops by air is only around one coy size while the main bulk move by tonners? For GDS, the whole battalion is moved using helicopters. During my time, we have little FIBUA trainings. I mean like less component based trainning for FIBUA but more trainning for things like conventional attacks on vegetation type.

Bcos back during conversion course back in 2003, we had this EX SUMMEX in which is a concluding exercise that encompasses what u learnt all this weeks. It is a 7D6N back to back exercise with minimum amount of lull time in between(eg. rest).
In this ex, we are divided into red land and blue land. Both force are supposed to attack each other through ambush, fighting patrol, security and things on that line. But what interest me was this component. Each section is supposed to attack this water treatment plant that have been designated as communication facility for this Exercise. The opposing force will send out fighting patrols, and ppls to provide perimeter defenses. Before the force set off for this mission. we are supposed to make cross-charges and carry many blocks to simulate block charges, that we learnt during explosive ordance lessons.
It was free for all in which the blue force or red force platoon will think of how to carry out the attack at night under the command of the PC. The OC later gave a little discussion on the possible route of attack.......... in the morning.
Is this considered as some form of raid or something else i was not aware............. -

like atec.....first mission was coastal hook whole batt then walk to take over red land.
2nd mission transport by heli(whole batt..not wayang paper play..rode chinooks) to drop off and walk to objective to do fibua at nite
3rd mission was defend 2nd mission's objective till evening
so far..the whole battalion moved twice by helicopter and twice by assault boat for division and battalion exercises.. -

For my ATEC, the first mission was BN level fly in using helis. Of course there are TAGs, so on. For first mission, we walked abt 25KM to the objective. Very demoralising as we kept meeting sizable amount of enemy resistance along the way. So our CO gave orders to do bashing
cum fast march to FUP towards the end.
Our second mission is defense of the hill but our defense part was not very long from early noon to around 3 the next morning.
The last mission was walking again for abt 12km to the objective in Yishun, and yes, it is Yishun. Was quite shock can see HDB in the far distance. Quick attack and defense till late afternoon -

All I know is he's from 1st Guards, either from year 2004-2005 or 2005-2006 (I got the date wrong last time).
That fella really dunno what he doing. All he can tell me is what HE did.. he is oblivious to almost everyone else. I think the training too siong for him to tahan, so he only concentrated on his own training.
But as to my question... can anyone tell me if the whole company is trained in river crossing or one platoon specialises in river crossing? Because if I read this thread correctly Rockhound seemed to say that one coy specialised in river crossing as opposed to one platoon. -

regroup...walk to obj...midway walked in circles cos opfor messed with our markings our CRT made...abt to reach obj kana arty again...
then whack objective
then regroup....2nd mission got picked up by chinooks an SPs....send us to LCK....walked the whole nite......whacked a water refinery thingy....till morning...then defend that till evening..... -
Looks like INF does lots of FIBUA stuff compared to during my time in GDS. So what water refinery u all protect? Did u all deploy in the premises of the water refinery? Or was the water refinery an abandon plant?Originally posted by Rockhound:not 3 sir...

For the OPFOR messing up CRT. I think one of the way to avoid this is to introduce only one drop of the cylume solution into the marker. Bury the marker with some leaves to make it obvious only to those wearing NVG. -

N pray hard that the aggressor company is having their off days.
I think the route of infiltration is screwed up badly by the CO, S2, S3 or which OCs.
claymore mines + ambush platoon would have replace the messing up of cylume straws...
So how well did 2 sir did for ATEC ? -

Troop concentration. This is the time to slack off a little, cook some nice food, snatch a nap, etc, before the "siong" stuff begins. Some Advance party people (scouts, landing zone party) will be heli-inserted.
Flying time. Everybody will get to fly.
Not sure if it is the same, but for us, the CO will have a "Vanguard" company flying in first. The vanguard will move off before the rest of the unit is flowned in. They will secure all the major danger areas, trigger off any ambushes and engage any opforce partols.
The rest of the unit can then move very fast to the objective with minimial contacts with the opforce.
Then whack the enemy lor.

He never mentioned the size of the company at all i.e. how many men... if got other country people come here KPO you think they know? anyway other country intelligence sure know these things one lah... thiese kind of things how to hide? it doesn't matter *grin*

Talking abt the issue of GDS, since the tsunami episode, in which RSN failed initially to deplo the FCU and FCEP due to the debris, why have the army not considered alternatives like the AAAV-7 vehicle for the GDS formation. In times of war, the beach head may be flooded with natural obstacles that hinder FCU movement, and the FCU are not protected from shrapnels, thus the AAAV-7 can provide the protection and mobility that GDS needs. I mean, troops can move faster in land rather than wait for other modes of transport. We need not get too many. Enough for one BN is suffice in my view.
