It has about the same armour as the M113 I think. not much protection.Originally posted by equlus84:Talking abt the issue of GDS, since the tsunami episode, in which RSN failed initially to deplo the FCU and FCEP due to the debris, why have the army not considered alternatives like the AAAV-7 vehicle for the GDS formation. In times of war, the beach head may be flooded with natural obstacles that hinder FCU movement, and the FCU are not protected from shrapnels, thus the AAAV-7 can provide the protection and mobility that GDS needs. I mean, troops can move faster in land rather than wait for other modes of transport. We need not get too many. Enough for one BN is suffice in my view.
in times of war.. not only will be the seabed be littered with natural obstacles.. to defend a beach, opposition will also deliberately throw in obstacles to hinder forces moving in..Originally posted by equlus84:Talking abt the issue of GDS, since the tsunami episode, in which RSN failed initially to deplo the FCU and FCEP due to the debris, why have the army not considered alternatives like the AAAV-7 vehicle for the GDS formation. I don't know it's amour protection, but won't the AAAV7 be damaged by 0.50 rounds and artillery+motars?Originally posted by equlus84:I meanI am aware of the fact that NDU are supposed to clear off the mines and obstacle the opforces laid down but I am referring to the other capabilities of the AAAV-7 that can be exploited. After the beach head is secured troops must be ferried forward to form some sort of vanguard to act as screens to the landing forces. Yes a tonner can be used to ferry those troops, but considering the tonners is protected by only a piece of canvas, this is dangerous as ther might be artillery fire from deeper forward. The AAAV7-p can also serve as quick efficient transport to assist the GDSmen to be mobile enough to exploit the shock effect they cast upon the enemy during the inital landing and capture more vantage pts.
It need not be a AAAV-7, but it could be the M113 Alligator or even a tracked version of the terrex, as long as it is amphibious.
