[Scenario]What if our boys were the 15 Royal Marines seized?

As all of you would have heard, the 15 Royal Marines personnel were captured by Iran after conducting boarding operations to check for smuggling and other illegal activities in Iraqi waters at the Shatt- Al Ahab waterway..
We all know the RSN's most recent deployment to that AO consisted of the same types of activities, as per "RSS Resolution and its 180-person crew left Singapore Nov. 27 for a three-month deployment in the Persian Gulf. The Singaporean Ministry of Defense Web site said the ship will help protect waters around oil terminals and provide logistics support for coalition vessels and helicopters. It also will conduct patrols, queries and boarding operations."

What if we had gotten into this kind of situation? What would you expect us to do?
This is important because the SAF is moving towards more peacekeeping and UN missions in more dangerous zones. Anyone care to discuss?[/url] -
We don't have the numbers sufficiently deployed to conduct a raid and do a rescue. All we can do is to ask UN for help. Don't think too much about it, the UN troops are contributed by different countries. They don't train together enough to have the spirit to help each other.
I don't think Singapore will send their troops to rescue some others, so don't expect too much. Commanders on the ground will not send the balance troops to conduct rescue. If he loses them, he has more to answer.
There will be more work here in Singapore, with Ministers making speeches, condolences to the family, and preparing for the flag for worse case scenario, how to save on compansation. -
I think our guys will shoot first talk later. Mindef never tell you wat our guys did overseas. All classified info. If really sway kena detain, then I think within 24hrs they will be free. Coz Sg and Iran friends mah. SM Goh just came back there.

i would think under the table we'd try to get them out using SOF or NDU. under wraps kinda stuff.
They're our men afterall. -
I think our friendship with Iran may be able to count for something.
In any case, pray that doesn't happen. I doubt Singapore's willingness to take a risk to mount any form of armed rescue operation. -

I'm more inclined to believe that our black ops can and will take care of the situation, should diplomatic solutions fail.
I believe we would do it simultaneously. It would not be beyond us to conduct clandestine ops in that region, I feel. -

First response Diplomatic channel thru third countries --- like Indonesia best buddy in SE Asia with Iran. Possible together with UN approach to secure the return of SAF men.
I think UK and US does not have any politcal will to open a new front. Blair and Bushs' terms are coming to an end politically. So no military solution.
So if SAF were to mount a special ops it has to do it Solo. I do not think we have the resources. Even we get support from US , UK on intel.
To bring 15 person back you need transport, air support, possible naval support. It would bring the deployment to a whole new level.
I would prefer boarding party start firing....support by UVV. mother vessel calling in for air support thru coalition in the region. It woudl escalate the region to a new level. Blood would spill. Than it is a matter of resolve. -

I think the NDU will be replaced by the SWG
Using my theory:
The SG government don't care much about the soldiers.. They would rather do it thru diplomatic channels rather than risk a botched SOF/SWG mission and "lose face". If the soldiers cannot get out even thru diplomatic channels I sincerely hope the SG government will not be so cold hearted and leave them for good. (I'm I abit biased because I had a rather bad NS experience) -

however, i was thinking more from the singaporeans angle - will something like this happening cause furore amongst singaporeans at home, and hence the cessation of this and all such missions in future? basically, how will singaporeans take such an incident, esp if it ever turns nasty? -

It's easy for those who can understand why we have to have a presence in the Middle East, to continue supporting the idea of such missions, but the man in the street might not see the link as to why our boys are abroad etc, and that's where the challenge lies..
From the look of things here, I'm sure there will be a sizeable number who won't want to back down.
Seriously though, it's uncharted waters for us, esp with more deployments. -

although knowing singapore's politics... diplomatic discussions will be the bulk of it... And the growing public sentiments on why we should send our sons to such a dangerous operation and stuff... -
prob diplomatic means + propaganda bck home on why they are sent to die there and assurances that they wll do their best, etc.
and lastly will say that they deserve a payrise for handling he situation well even if they screwed it up -

He is not so highly paid (as compare to Laywers and bankers) to resolve probems (if any). -
Just curious, what if our boys at gunpoint, chose to engage the OPFOR and somehow manage to bag a couple, before the whole friendly force escape back to their crafts and make their escape? When the Iranians kpkb, would our govt. hang our guys by the balls and dish out punishments to them for damaging the diplomatic r-ship etc.?
Or would they support them? -
It would not be in our interest to hang our own guys for the sake of relations with a state that is not close to us, nor vital to our national interests.
