Life is not about having a glorious and exciting military life, just as youths in other countries without a conscript military grew up to be fine men who contributed to their countries and the world. Why do people hate NS. Not all but most. Its true, they hate NS. NS represents a platform to challenge your taste for combat. Its like having that perfect cup of coffee. Some like it bitter, some like it sweet. Too sweet, and you get bored, and you wanna die. Too bitter, and....you wana die. Just right, and you will want to come back for more. Now, in CDO, your life will be more exciting than Infantry or Engineers, and that's a fact. Some will grdually develope this taste for that excitement, they leave the army with a sense of pride and accomplishment no words can describe, but a handful will leave with a body full of injuries and bitterness no one else can understand.
If you are thinking about when people drop out, that is the wrong thing to keep in your head if you want it bad. The key is to give it all, do not have any reservations, and do what you are told. Keyword: OBEY.
The CDO training is divided into several phases lasting a few months each, with the exception of airborne course. Time to operational is about 1 year. You will experience hell in the first 6 months, you will learn to live in hell, joke in hell, laugh in hell, make friends for life in hell, and miss hell. Then when you come to operational, you will still be in hell, with more levels to choose from. But from it all you will discover you human physical limits. It's kinda fun and interesting, especially with that mass puking session.....hahahahah. Oh and you will have to clean up after that.
Talking about this makes me wanna go back and sharpen my ontario knife. -

I'll disagree with the "obey" part as well. Yes, you have a job to do, but "obey" implies that you do exactly as you're told, period. I don't know which company you were from, but we were given the objective and how we chose to achieve that objective was entirely up to us - that, if anything, characterises how CDO operates, or at least how it did all those years ago when I was there. -
That's another school of thought which is not up to me to describe.

Well if it was entirely up to you on how to go about "doing it" then there was no instruction and therefore nothing to obey nor disobey. You did not have the luxury to choose to take up the mission and therefore when you achieved the objective, you were just obeying orders. I was in 2 Coy, enlisted December 1990. George, Kenny, Chang, Ari and the Peter brothers were all from my batch.
Keong is still around - I dropped by Hendon recently and bumped into him, and he's mellowed out a lot.
Sundram was my platoon sergeant - you'd probably be familiar with his no-fuss way of doing things, and it rubbed off on the whole platoon, so we took the job seriously but we generally kept things low-key. -
The enlistment was at the end of the year? That explains my miscalculation.
Heheheheheh. We got a sadist for OC. His name was Lee Yong Heng. We hated the training under his watch, and for that very same reason we began worshiping to a photograph of him pasted on our bunk door after he left the coy.
The uncommon sadist. We will always remember him fondly, and with admiration, as the ruler of hell.
If I were given a choice to whom to serve under had I been sent to indonesia that year, it would have been him. -

I haven't the slightest idea what PTP is, but once the real fun starts:
- focus on getting the job done
- lend your section/platoon mates a hand whenever you can
- learn to catch catnaps whenever you can
- no matter how tired you are, always make a point to be aware of the situation and the environment
- don't whinge
- don't quit, even if you have to drag yourself along
- don't try to get noticed - if your work's good enough your instructors will know, if it's not you'll be marked as a showboater
Apart from that, have fun learning new things - it's not torture, it's just expanding your capabilities. -
Hey , im a Pes A , reading post from 1st page , give me a creep coz i think got high chance to go comandos , and let say i suay suay kena comandos (got other vocation in mind) , i can say im not yet mentally prepare for it , people say comandos very siong , so excatly how the situation in it and how fierce the training.
any ex-comandos care to share ? -

I don't see what the big brouhaha is about it being siong and hell and God knows what else. Hang in there, focus on the job and that's really all there is to it. It only goes downhill if you start talking yourself into thinking it's siong.
Let me put the facts to you. Every year the training gets easier because the bloody TSR gets thicker and everybody's daddy is a friggin' lawyer. To date thousands of men have gotten the beret, and it's just getting easier. What's stopping you? -

i went for my VA a while back and after that i was psyching myself for CDOs then now i've received my letter and it's to BMTC.. man i feel kinda disappointed haha.. was looking forward to airborne..
i was thinking if im gonna be a soldier, at least go all the way for the short duration i'll be a NSF.
oh wells.. -
Why not try the shooting team? I don't know anyone who hates it. And it's virtually open to anyone regardless of vocation (combat) as long as you can shoot straight, which is not a hard thing to do.Originally posted by boariggy:hey guys,

I'm not sure if I can really call myself a Lion. 1/2 the time I wasn't around. And when I came back I was sort of seen as an outcast and despised by some more popular figures. My only contribution was as a pacer in Brunei for my coy. For the whole week. It was sick, I couldn't stop counting. I even counted the number of times I put the spoon in my mouth when I ate.
