Windering about the part when it comes to pulling the trigger though. That will take some anger from me. -
i think u should have the right mindset to go thru the training instead of worrying if u'll pull the trigger.. training to be a sniper is tough like hell, not jus simply being patient or not.. btw, have u even enlisted yet? real life military is nothing like wat u see in movies or not the telly.. mass media portrayals like to show some kinda hero who can take on hundreds of enemies by himself.. well, try being a hero during bmt and see wat happensOriginally posted by chanjyj:I won't mind being a sniper though. The number of sniper trainee per intake (from infantry / guards formation) is very small indeed as it's a brigade asset. Each intake will depend on when the existing NSF snipers ORD.
One do need to complete SISPEC first to be selected. I'm excluding those from Cdo, navel divers, SOF, Regulars, Mata units etc as i'm not sure how they are selected.
During my time in the 90s, near to completing SISPEC, potential candidates will be shortlisted based on certain criteria, such as, PES status, security clearance, race (hmmm), eyesight, range score etc (some did volunteered, so i heard). The Sniper PC gets to interview and pick who he wants. I get to pick about 20 odd, slightly more than my orbat strength (catering for potential out of course personel, spares will got to other brigades to fill up their shortage, if any). Maybe someone who ORD recently can confirm the current selection process.
Btw, IF (a BIG if) you are thinking of signing on as a regular sniper, think twice. Most leave the service after their first contract or transfer to other combat vocations. There are only a handful now, all sitting in SIW - sniper wing as instructors ... -
oh..... but if you become a sniper, are you still trained in close combat? Like how to use a knife. Or even use the jack knife to kill........

A proficient sniper should be able to retreat before Arty fire. Guess if the enemy was able to pin down a sniper before he retreats, he's a dead duck. However, it's not easy to locate a sniper as many may think.
During the sniper course, we spend much time (part of our training) trying to identify where shots (single shot to simulate sniper fire) are coming from, and guess what ... we could bearly identify which direction the single shots are from not to mention pin pointing the exact knoll.
Besides, depending on the nature of mission, we do prepare sniper trench, not much protection from direct arty though. -
