I was in the Navy 2-3 years ago as a NSF, and I will admit that drinking is a culture. I served onboard a ship that is catered for NSmen training and often when we sail overseas, the NSMen will drink, although never in open view of my SQN officers.Originally posted by Simon Dean:Taken from a blog(Source is stated below):
Ok I've been away for the past 2-3 weeks on army reserve. We went overseas for training. What did I learn? The main thing is that
DRINKING ALCOHOL IS ONE OF THE DUMBEST ACTIVITIES ON EARTH.
After our missions, the navy tradition is heavy drinking. I'm not in the navy but we were doing a combined mission so I was in on the drinking. I almost NEVER drink. I KNOW its DUMB and I don't like the taste of alcohol.
I ended up drinking 3 beers and 2 shots of whiskey. I think I can handle alcohol decently and I was alright. The next morning there was a little headachey feeling and a bit of s sore throat. You know alcohol dehydrates you right?!. But more than that, I woke up and I was PISSED OFF. I thought to myself why this was the case. My reflections...
1. I was upset with this incredibly stupid drinking culture that is supported by high ranking officers and I was under a lot of authoritarian pressure to drink. DUMB.
2. I was upset that in this culture, drinking a lot is somehow linked to manliness...DUMB.
3. I was upset with myself that I was not able to find a way out of it. Without lying, disrespect for authority, or violence.
I spent a day recovering from this incredible stupidity. That was a day which I could have used productively. That was a day I will never get back. Remember time is a NON-RENEWABLE resource.
FOOLISH DRINKING...NEVER AGAIN

don't tar the whole organization and call it a culture for one's lack of self control ...
