I have started this thread as an avenue for seasoned shooters and would be enlistees to discuss and share their experiences with regards to the art of shooting. It would be helpful to focus on the established basics of shooting before any unorthodox methods are are introduced, which may or may not be useful. Useful links to other sites are welcome (if it doesn't go against their policy). I hope this thread will continue to benefit our boys (ok and girls if you are in the armed forces) when they enter their combat training.

basic there r 4 things to note. i can't remember the 4 terms during bmt liao.
1st practice is a computerised screen target at IMT during bmt. using 100m canadian bull target. the computer target is smaller than the live range. live range 100m very easy one.
most important is the 4 second rule and the breathing technique during shooting and ur grip of the rifle and the trigger. -
I forgot about the 4 sec rule totally. Can you describe it in more detail?

real shooting can onli learn at range...if one really take the time to understand the whole shooting art...
BMT nearly failed my shooting sia last time cos i was more into..."wat if i did this where would the bullet go...if i did that?"

then get used to rifle traits...go sispec learn abit more from my PC who was recon sniper trainedand he like to talk abt his experiences at marine sniper school...then go medic school never learn abt shooting...
then go unit where time to collect marksmanship pay...
once u get used to sight picture....breath control....follow thru.....the bullet does the rest
plus...cleaning ure rifle religiously builds a weird connection between rifle and shooter -

I prefer to squeeze off after exhaling ...than "bang"\
HOwever, most of my freinds that does 1000 yds precision shoot and snipers from SWAT and miklitary prefer the breath out.. 2 sec...hold.. than bang and continue breath out.... ( this method is also being use by Maj Plastor of the author of the Ultimate Sniper )
EIther way the point being you want to squeeze off during the momemnt when you are most stable!

OK, so I reckon most here do not advocate holding of breath method? You know the type that you seal off your passageway with lungs full of air? Cos that's what some characters out there are teaching. At least that's what the shooters claim when they were taught.

I'm more used to using the natural respiratory pause to squeeze off... If in real situation then different story...

For me, it is some kind of "feeling" whether you can hit the target(s) or not. Of course, you must know and practise those shooting fundamentals. Take aim, "feeling" correct, then squeeze off...

That's my preferred technique too. All of my ARs have two-stage match triggers; I'll take up the first stage and 'cue' my finger at the second stage, exhale, pause, aim, then pull the trigger through the second stage to break it.Originally posted by wonderamazement:I'm more used to using the natural respiratory pause to squeeze off... -
Well, I have since laid off my rifles and taken up pistol shooting. Air pistol.
For me, I take in a deep breath (2/3 max lung capacity) while I raise my arm and align my weapon to the target. During the last 10% of my inhaling stage, I put my sight right where it should be, exactly. Then I will begin a slow exhaling process. The flow of air from my lungs is regulated not by the diaphram(how the XXX do you spell it?) but rather by constricting my air passage or osophegus (how the XX do you....nvm). Much like how some divers will exhale while resurfacing. I find this method particularly effective.
1)Retains a certain amount of oxygen rich air in the lungs to aid concentration. This part is usually overlooked.
2)Stabilizes the body and "cushions" the effects of minute "twitching" on the weapon's aim.
3)Feels more natural squeezing off on the exhale rather than inhale.
4)"Times" the shot. If you are out of breath, you have been aiming too long.
The above method was developed (by moi, if not, then it must have been a coincidence of some sort) for the purpose of 10m .177 air pistol events. However part of it is derived from years of shooting semi-auto rifles in various positions, useful in particular for standing positions.
For prone position, I recommend the constant light breathing method as an alternative to the other methods mentioned here. The constant light breathing method does away with thinking about how to breath and when to squeeze off. It is assumed that the firer has an ample amount of time to engage a static target. By breathing lightly and constantly, the firer is supplied with a near constant flow of air. My experience with prone position suggests that heartbeat overtakes breathing as the main culprit of sight movement. With consistent slow breathing, the rate and magnitude of the heartbeat is reduced. Thus allowing the shot to be taken in between beats.
