Taping the grenades

Hey guys, i recently got the spare time to watch Black Hawk Down. I noticed one guy, a delta operator, tapping the pins of the grenade with duct tape. Any idea why he did tt? Dun think tt is sop aint it?

it's just that their duties do put them into tight spots, and hence, the taping of grenades is just a safety measure to prevent accidental discharge. not sure if it's done in the army though, i haven't even went in yet ..

think sg's grenades very safe one. Must twist the metal pin then can pull out.
anyway read somewhere overseas special forces take out the pin, flick off the trigger, wait, then throw to the target. They time it such that the grenade explode immediately on target. -
Some movies use teeth somemore.

To be able hold the grenade when the pin is out must be some sort of Hero. -
If you observe the SFG-87 closely, there is this clip like thingy that allows thw ring to be placed close by snapping the ring onto the clip like thing

The pin on the SAF SFG 87 is just for safety...You can hold it for as long as you want even if the pin is pulled...that is provided that the lever is also being held in your fist and did not fly off...so don't worry because we can all be Heros...Originally posted by jianfish9:The moment the pin come out, I can't wait to get rid of it.

5 second rule?
1-2 seconds pull and throw?
3-5 wait for it to go "boom"?
Besides, it takes a lot of effort just to get the damned ring off...

ya lor... lim bei struggle to take out the pin and when i did it,n throw the goddamn grenade,i nearly knock out my PC with my rifle butt.. heng he siam fast..

His taping of the pin could be one of a few reasons ...
i) As a safety precaution against the pin getting snagged on obstacles and getting pulled out ... imagine leopard crawling with the safety pin ring flipped up and exposed. Although I don't remember being taught to tape the pin, IINM we were taught to make sure the pin faced inward when placed in the grenade pouch.
ii) He may have flattened the crimp on the safety pin thereby making it easier to pull, hence the tape to prevent it sliding out on its own.
iii) He may be thinking he's on a training excercise

it's good that the ring be hard to pull out.
Imagine if we go to war, and in our jungle terrain the ring gets caught on tree branch and you didn't see because you are trying to shoot the enemy... you move, ring gets pulled out, bye bye platoon.
Then again... in combat you may not even notice the tension the branch is exerting on the grenade ring when you move. -

Come to think of it, shouldn't just throw the nade immediately. If it lands near an enemy, he might has time to safely dump it somewhere or even throw it back! Lotsa things can happened during those 7 sec. -

it is to prepare for his own convenient.
for those who have handle a grenade before knows that the pin is hard to pull out.
some practice clip off end of one side of the pin, ( the pin end is split left and right making it into a T shape like, act as stopper ) making it only with one side still hook/retain on the grenade which make it more easier to pull out and this lead to tape up the hold pin. -
anyone pull grenade before, and u was too excited or nervous in doing so, that after u pull the pin out, the grenade slip n fly outta ur hands n lands a few metres from u!??!!
by the way, if pull the pin out already, can put back? if put back grenade will still explode? -

Our SG fragmentation grenade has a 5sec fuse. It starts burning when the safety lever spring-off from the grenade cap-top. You should start counting-down when the grenade is thrown from your palm, not when the pin is being removed.
5sec is just adequate if you are a good thrower with good reach of distance. The German's potatoe-masher was designed with a stick to improve the reach of the grenade in the open.
Now that we have grenade launchers allocated at such proliferate rate in our fighting orbat, maybe, we should have differential fuse screwed on our hand-grenade so that we can choose the length of stand-off timing. ie., a shorter 2sec fuse for room-clearing as opposed to 5sec fuse for fighting in open.
As a gentle reminder, as long as the safety lever is held in place, the grenade will not explode. Hence, it can be improvised as a booby-trap by tying the grenade with safety pin removed but retained in it's shipping container. Attached the free-end of the string across a road or a door that you expect enemy traffic; volia, you have an improvised anti-personnel IED. A common trick used by Thai soldiers and, no doubt, others in the region. -
They should design something that can be remote controlled by handphone.
No wait. If enemy can hack the grenade jia lat already. -
to use HP to build a booby trap, it will be better achieved with a TNT charge / claymore with an electric detonator. but the builder will have to be careful with the RF from the HP, it can just trigger the trap.

I can remove bottle caps with my teeth so one time I tried pulling the pin with my chops.........and not only does it hurt it is totaly impossible! Dont know how seargeant saunders did it on TV.Originally posted by Ponders:Some movies use teeth somemore. -
