Flexibility, Common Sense & Situational Awareness

Inspired by Moca's thread in MN about the SAF's weakness
As above, these three elements should be the very foundation of a soldier's thinking and behavior.
How many fellow soldiers or commanders do you see practising them? What do you think is the best way to inculcate such values? Are we relying too much on outdated training doctrines and manuals?

Flexibility - with SOP, flexibility my ass
Common Sense - severely lacking, especially those higher up. how can they have common sense when they don't understand the common man?
Situational Awareness - require experience, lao jiaos where the RSM hides. -

Flexilibilty : No much around leh,some really follow book...
Common Sense: Not much,where got see ppl every weekend go detail then happily nxt week put again???

I think you have to look at it at various level. I would not throw away training manual and doctrine if u r sitting at the top. But of course someone must always update these manual and experience. Especially with the change in Technologies and environment.
In private practice.
For big organization manual and procedure are written as it helps to establish corporate culture, it help to built on past experience so that it has learning curve as an entity. And enhance continuity. Institution move forward – Slow but steady.
The thing with SAF it is always in a simulated mode. how creative you get is still within the domain of simulation. If you put someone at harm ways their human instinct will kick in. Those did not have it won't make it.

Put them in uncharttered situation is at least a good way of seeing how commanders use the triads you mention. -

Send regular units for real training. Middle east for example. Let them gain experience by witnessing the situation there and learning from fellow soldiers of other nations how they access the situations and change accordingly. Of course they soldiers must be volunteering to go there. A dangerous place, but nontheless something to lear about flexibility, common sense and situational awareness.

Flexibility - When the cubicals r being used, don't throw ur noodles into the urinals...
Common Sense - Flush after shitting
Situational Awareness - If u start peeing on the floor... Re-aim into the urinals

Here's hoping commanders remember that there is such a thing as basic respect for soldiers' rights under the GOM. Rank is what you wear, leadership is what is viewed and experienced by your men and colleagues.
Secondly,if you want to get the best out of your guys, you have maximise their talent and allocate their roles properly.
Lastly, knowledge retention and organisational growth go hand-in-hand. Value experience, and mix in some youthful exuberance in your team to acheive a balanced output. -

the SAF system is too unforgiving
if u make a mistake you get marked for life
the result: nobody dares to try new approaches, new methods of doing things, unless you have enough seafood on your shoulders...
so, everybody play safe and just follow whatever is in the SOP lor... doesn't matter that the SOP was written 10 years ago...

Sometimes, Knowledge Management is not properly implemented too.
Letting go of WOs right now may not be the smartest thing to do as well.
