Nah, nothing much to be respected over. It's just that I came into the world earlier than you. haha. And yes, I am close to 30.
There are tons more horror stories I can tell you about life in 30SCE but as you can see, your life in 30 is so much better than mine. But still, when I meet my own guys they will usually tell me they miss life in the unit. Imagine, no need to worry about money, food, or accomodation. All taken care of. Once you hit the working world, all will be different. And you have a bunch of tok cok brudders with you, have fun and shit together.
Trust me, treasure this time you have in the unit. Cos it will happen only once in your entire life.

The MGB is a fully metal bridge that is broken up into many pieces that have to be put together and built by us. Much like Lego, only much bigger, and heavier. haha. There are different panels that we have to connect and then let the heavy vehicle launch it across the river. Each panel weighs at least 200kg, and needs at least four men to carry. I do not know how many panels there are in an average bridge, but I reckon there are at least 30. And not to mention the heavy decks that we have to place on the bridge manually. That is also damn exhaustive, needs good stamina. It takes upwards of 2 - 4 hours to build and about 3 hours to dismantle.

30SCE brings back memories of my NSF day. ORDed for 3 years already. time flies.
argghh 30SCE is such a lousy camp. 3rd Sig is like heaven while 30SCE is like hell.
opps forget to mention I was from HQ S2 dept. The one and only combat fit dept in HQ. guess I had a slightly better life than my fellow companies camp mates. -

Was from HQ Signals (S2 is not the only combat fit department in HQ!)
HQ Signals doing all the guard duty for u all lucky bastards..

oh ya during my time e signalers always siam guard duty. damn
consider yourself unlucky ba for not able to be a signaler in 3rd Sig. -
field pioneers are not that bad now. no more MGB to build, only APB bridge which is crane assisted. Of cos still for the siong stuffs like clearing mine field, constructing obstacles, etc. but look on the bright side, u get to do things not many ppl have e.g. demolitions, etc

izzit? pointless. in the end, still a pioneer only... give u at most CPL. and still sweep the floor everyday when in NS.
and, does 30SCE conduct L/F that often to be proud of doing demolitions? -

I dun like to compare as there is no ends to comparision. For example, I may have gone through a siong NSF life. But compared to my predecessors in the 70s and 80s (they hand carry the Bailey Bridge - heavier than even the MGB), I think I got off easier.
But you guys should really thank your lucky stars on the life you guys have now in army, or even in 30SCE.
In my days, 30SCE is considered really hell. Worse than even the commandoes. Nowadays all i hear about 30SCE is about how it has slackened a lot and is no longer as siong.
I heard you guys are even learning carpentry to make up for the lack of carrying bridges!
Do you know that many of us old guys are still having injuries sustained from carrying those bridges? I for one, nearly lost my left leg when I fell while carrying a bridge part in the dark.
In the 70s and 80s, Engineers were one of the most siong units in the SAF.
A bit of OT,
My father was doing amphibious ops in Engineers in the 70s, (not too sure about the units then). POW training was included for his team, and they had to go for recce training and SAFINCOS training , under the Israelis and 1st batch of local instructors.
Their training was either on par with Commandos or even worse.
Everything was done by hand. Literally. You spent days in coastal areas, in water most of the time.
I'm not sure about today, as I'm from MES, but I can assume from the systems I've seen (was in maintenance planning), the grunt work has been readily sliced away. -

any combat role is also shiong, i was posted to infantry pioneer during reservist. i think rifle man also very shiong, it is all different type of physical demand.
there is strong focus on discipline in the unit because of the complex task. also got to be on the ball when stand-by 24-7.

hey, just finished the common engineer phase for specialist course, got posted as field engineer. likely to end up in 30sce. very grim about my upcoming ns life, but haiz, can't do much abt it. nice to hear from so many of the laojiaos before me though

I got into 30 SCE in the 90s. It a mono intake (Bravo Coy).
Till now, I still cant 4get the days at Jurong Camp.

I was from 30SCE Delta Coy, sent over unluckily from BMTC, ORD Feb 2003. Those days, under SSG Simon Tan. The first thing we kena when we get there is confiscate handphone (no HP during whole of training phase). Every time knock it down is 50 rather than 20. Kena defaulters, bunk inspection in parade square all that crap.
The bonds formed between your mates will last you a lifetime.
