How are we giving away our position?Originally posted by maggot:In live combat if you turned ON the GPS device you are giving away your position
Hope you are on some vehicle to run away from artillery fire if there's any
A GPS receiver calculates its position by measuring the distance between itself and three or more GPS satellites. Measuring the time delay between transmission and reception of each GPS microwave signal gives the distance to each satellite, since the signal travels at a known speed. The signals also carry information about the satellites' location. By determining the position of, and distance to, at least three satellites, the receiver can compute its position using trilateration.[3] Receivers typically do not have perfectly accurate clocks and therefore track one or more additional satellites to correct the receiver's clock error.Originally posted by ord personnel:How are we giving away our position?
The GPS device is a receiver, not transceiver.
Originally posted by maggot:The transmission you highlighted refers to the signal transmitted by the satellites, not the GPS receiver.

Now you know why the battery drain is so fast [/b]
Why are you not being issued one if you are allowed to use it? From my understanding, there are standard issue GPS receivers in the army. Which unit are you from?Originally posted by cococomomomo:Yep was allowed to use for this upcoming exercise.
Any exact models to recommend?
I've tried one olive green Garmin in the army. Really old model. GPS12 if I am not wrong. Does the SAF have newer models available for personnel use?Originally posted by crosshairs:Why are you not being issued one if you are allowed to use it? Regarding MGR, based on my experience during a topo exercise in Tekong.Originally posted by Ponders:Most Garmin models has MGS function.
but please be WARNED that the MGS format displayed on Garmin models is the full MGS as defined.
MGS is a grid system deviced by US Army where the world is divided into 100km squares.
each 100km squares have a alphabetic codes.
the 6 or 8 digit MGS that is normally used in SAF is found in the Garmin's string but you need to know how to interpret it.
SAF MGS is usually simple 5671 2319 or 567 231.
Garmin MGS is up to 16 (maybe more), like A1G35671 B2G12319.
go for the eTrek series. most should have MGS.
But one question.. how come they want you to buy one?
Low precision as you may know its a topo training, so they still want you to search for the checkpoint even you know you are in the correct MSG.Originally posted by ord personnel:Regarding MGR, based on my experience during a topo exercise in Tekong.
Example of MGR I saw: CCP 5 is given as 737564 (signboard)
On my GPS, it read 673777 156378. The actual MGR always corresponded to the 2nd,3rd,4th digits. Given, mine were 1m precision whereas the signboard had a 100m precision. Why such low precision, i wonder. Anyone knows what the first digit on my reading represents?
Btw, you will need to set your GPS to West Malayan RSO with datum Kertau 1948. Not the usual lat/long, WGS84.
Thank youOriginally posted by Ristar:yes. N95 pwnz!

and, while we are at the subject of being tracked by the enemy, the use of your handphone can give out your position, if the enemy owns the telco (other countries or we got pwned), accuracy depending on the cell size.
and... by "using hp", i actually meant switching it on.
