training to be soldier is still quite popular, never heard of the hokkien one thoughOriginally posted by blitzonic:There were a few Tiger Hongs in the SAF history, believe me.
At least this new writeup mentioned how his appointment was different Shamsuddin's when they were RSMs. Good to learn something new every time!
Overall, a commendable edition. Plenty of info, insights, anecdotes & stuff, though personally I found it too skewered towards Tekong BMT. Even then, there was no mention/comparisons of mono-intakers. I dunno what is the recruit strength nowadays, but in my time a ITD company in Camp 1 Tekong consisted of about 160 enlistees & two years later I taught a mono-intake batch that totaled about 280. (Only about 40% were kept on after BMT.)
Frankly, I'm been clueless about "Purple Light In the Valley" too; it's only when I googled around that I discovered its popularity. Has it replaced "Training to be Soldier" & that Hokkien "Ai-yo, ai-yo, ai-ai-yo" one, as the original NS song?
