Anyway I believe EOD should be considered elite judging, by the high amounts of risk in their job scope, especially so when they are dealing with real, live ordance. If you wanna classify in terms of special-skill identifications (badges & tabs), then other such experts like snipers, parachutists/riggers, Rangers, etc. must also be recognized alongside the EOD personnel. But they're highly-trained soldiers, rather than highly-trained units per se.
Has it changed since I left? I did my demolitions training at SOCE.Originally posted by blitzonic:This local equivalent would instead be the CDOs, who train their own demolition experts.
Is SOF opned for NSF to join?Originally posted by Gedanken:Has it changed since I left? I did my demolitions training at SOCE.
We had occasional refresher training, but we didn't pick up any new techniques or materials during those sessions.Originally posted by blitzonic:No follow-up, meh? I remember those ushers at the Navy Open House telling me their NDU brethren get to upgrade their emblems after further training, or something like that.
Checking online, I can also see local 'Basic EOD' & 'Advance EOD' badges being sold on eBay. There's even a RSAF EOD one, which I've never heard of before.
Nope. I believe you can go for selection as an NSF, but if you're in, you gotta be a regular.Originally posted by will4:Is SOF opned for NSF to join?
Soon, those chaps with unadorned uniforms will attain an aura of exclusiveness, some might point at them and say..ooh..Special Forces one, SIB one.... undercover.Originally posted by Gedanken:We had occasional refresher training, but we didn't pick up any new techniques or materials during those sessions.
I didn't get any extra badges as a demo man. Then again, it's been a while and things may have changed. Seems like everybody and his dog's got all manner of crap hanging off their uniforms these days. It's only a matter of time before they start handing out badges for turning up to work.
I believe U have to be at least 9 mths in SAF before they take U in for selection...after selection...if U pass...then sign contract to be regular.Originally posted by Gedanken:Nope. I believe you can go for selection as an NSF, but if you're in, you gotta be a regular.
Ok thanks alot, I always thot EOD was part of SCE.Originally posted by blitzonic:If you wanna classify in terms of special-skill identifications (badges & tabs), then other such experts like snipers, parachutists/riggers, Rangers, etc. must also be recognized alongside the EOD personnel. In the Singapore context, those in 36 SCE train only as combat engineers too. EOD = Explosive Ordnance Disposal, geddit? i.e. Bomb disposal unit. They're not like the Viet Cong sappers who infiltrate to plant explosives as sabotage or ambush. This local equivalent would instead be the CDOs, who train their own demolition experts. NDU also has their own EOD sub-unit.
You know Jason Lim, the weirdo artist (~lol~) who dropped his chandelier at the Venice Biennale? He's a Pre-U buddy of mine & a former bomb-disposal expert at 36 SCE. He'd brought me up to his bunk once to "take cover" when I was in his camp, & I got to learn that his vocation was quite a good-life, even boring one. Sure, the dangers are there (when activated) & the technical demands are quite high. But he also had a lot of downtime -- plenty of standbys & on-calls -- when not attaching out to follow combat units doing blind clearance inside the SAFTI live-firing areas.
SOF also parent unit CommandosOriginally posted by wonderamazement:I was referring to him mentioning "Maritime CT Group"... So was asking if he meant SWG...
Well, there is the opposite camp who thinks more badge=Either very experienced or some elite unitOriginally posted by LazerLordz:Soon, those chaps with unadorned uniforms will attain an aura of exclusiveness, some might point at them and say..ooh..Special Forces one, SIB one.... undercover.

All tactical maneouvres are the same ........ left flank, right flank or attack from the rear.Originally posted by dumbdumb!:i heard if say SG keena attack, then guards will be helicoptered behind enemy forces or smth
then they rappel down and push from behind, while the normal infantry push from the front with their artillery and tanks and all that. and commando go and make havoc in the enemy base or smth
watever arh...lol..elite....can lose to SIR units every now and then for Best Inf Unit....they are still infantry nonetheless...companies all of same make up except for the LSV Companies..Originally posted by storm_freaky13:Guardsmen are elites, they are given the title by the government.
go wiki it. Enough of Guards are not elites. Whether they are pervceived as infantry with 'copter rides they are still elite.
I do believe the man's got a point.Originally posted by scabstermooch:It is often said that the Dog with the softest bark is likely to be the most dangerous. So it is with the SAF.
The most elite force in the SAF are clerks. These shadowy (arm-chair) warriors are everywhere and nowhere. They fratenize with the lowest of soldiers but are equally at ease in the company of the highest. With a flick of their wrist, they can reduce seasoned soldiers to gibbering wrecks. Even senior officers have a healthy respect, no - fear, of these pen-wielding angels of administrative chaos.
Just think - where are they when you are camo-ing up to go outfield? In bed that's where. Where are they when you squatting in the jungle trying to squeeze army rations out of your bowels? In the office that's where! And when you come back from the field weary, constipated and looking forward to the prospect of a nice hot bath? By then of course they would have booked out and are more likely than not chatting up your girlfriend...
